May 7, 2022-On a beautiful day for track and field Emporia State had four provisional qualifiers, two marks in the top five all-time at ESU, and advanced seven to Sunday's finals at the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The day started off with a pair of provisional qualifiers in the multi-events.Â
Brandon Wilkes finished third in the decathlon with a personal best total of 6402 points. Abigael Reid was fourth in the heptathlon with a provisional qualifier of 4913 points that ranks third all-time at Emporia State.
Alyssa Conway and
Holly Brockmeier each scored in the women's hammer for the Hornets. Conway threw 52.40m (171-11) to finish second while Brockmeier went 50.47m (165-7) to place fifth and give Emporia State 12 points in the event.
The throws continued to be good for the Hornet women as
Claire Crawford had a personal best of 42.84m (140-7) to place fifth in the discus.
Emporia State wrapped up their scoring on the day with a seventh place finish from Megan McManus in the pole vault. She cleared 3.78m (12-4.75) to give the Hornets two points.
After seven events Emporia State is in fifth place with 22.5 points. Reid was the only Emporia State woman to qualify for Sunday's finals. After completing the heptathlon she came back to run 1:02.81 to qualify sixth in the 400m hurdles.

Wilkes was the only Hornet to score on Saturday for the Hornet men but they did advance six spots to the finals.
Chase Rooney ran a personal best and provisional qualifying time of 53.14 to lead three Hornet advancers in the men's 400m hurdles. His time is the fifth best in Emporia State history. He will be joined in the finals by
Davion Scott who ran a personal best of 54.07 to qualify sixth and
Brock Merz who ran a personal best of 54.37 to secure the eighth spot in the finals. Â Â
Juwan Johnson will be running in two individual finals on Sunday. He ran a provisional time of 10.44 to qualify third for the finals in the 100m and then ran 21.43 to advance to the finals in the 200m with the sixth best time.
Xavier Hall rounds out the Hornets advancing to Sunday. He ran 14.74 to qualify with the seventh best time for the finals in the 110m hurdles.
Action will start up on Sunday with the men's javelin at 11:15 with the women's triple jump starting at 12:00 p.m. for the first action inside the stadium. The first running event will be the men's 4x100m relay at 1:30 with the meet scheduled to end with the running of the women's 4x400m relay at 5:15 p.m.
NOTES
There were three stadium and two meet records broken
               Northwest Missouri's Reece Smith set stadium and MIAA meet records in the 3000m steeplechase. His time of 8:42.50 broke the Welch Stadium record of 8:53.44 set by Vladimir Golias competing unattached in 1996 and Mike Vanata of Southeast Missouri's meet record of 8:44.34 set in 1984.
               Pittsburg State's Louis Rollins broke the stadium and MIAA meet records in the 110m hurdles. His time of 13.43 in the prelims broke the meet record of 13.81 set in 1997 by Pittsburg State's James McCarty and the stadium record of 13.66 set by Lincoln's Decosmo Wright in 2006.
               Missouri Western's Madison Nash broke the stadium record in the 10,000m run. Her time of  35:22.29 broke Western Colorado's Tumaini Urio's record of 35:48.14 set in 1995.
There were a total of 123 provisional qualifiers on Saturday across the meet.
