IT'S A CLASSIC  
The Hornets play host to the Midwest Classic on Thursday and Friday at Welch Stadium and Witten Track. This is the second of five scheduled home meets for Emporia State that will culminate with the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 21-23.
  
LAST LAP
Emporia State had one school record, three event champions, six runners up, and eight provisional marks at the ESU Spring Open on Friday.
Stella Agbokpah tied Latiyera Yeargin's school record with a provisional time of 11.63 in the 100m to finish third. She won the 200m in a provisional qualifying time of 24.02 that ranks third all-time at Emporia State.
Barbara Bentum ran the third best time in Emporia State history in the 100m with a time of 11.71 to finish fourth. She also placed second in the 200m with a time of 24.41.
Agbokpah and Bentum were joined by Mackenzie Sauerwein and Alexia Lewis in the 4x100m relay as they ran 47.04 to finish second.
Brooklyn Nolte had the other runner-up finish for the Emporia State women as she ran 18:59.41 to place second in the 5000m.
Ezekiel Seamster ran a PQ of 21.07 to win the men's 200m. He turned in the fourth best time in ESU history with a 10.29 to finish fourth in the 100m. He teamed with Andrew Holton, Brock Keith, Braden Lipgens to run 3:19.09 and finish second in the 4x400m relay.
Brooks Lowe finished second in the men's javelin with a provisional qualifying mark of 63.67m (208-10) on his final throw.
Max Neeley cleared a provisional qualifying bar of 4.95m (16-02.75) to place third in the pole vault.
Connor Deters had the other provisional mark for the Emporia State men. His mark of 17.20m (56-05.25) ranks fifth all-time at ESU and was good for fifth in the day's competition.  
Dylan Hunter wrapped up the day with a win in the 10,000m. His time of 30:33.44 is the second best 10K in Emporia State history,
Israel Domeh finished second in the 200m with a time of 21.07.
 
THE COACH
Seth Mischke is in his third year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field programs. The Hornets have produced six MIAA individual champions and seven First-Team All-Americans under his leadership. Before coming to Emporia State he spent one year at Chadron State. Eagle throwers earned five All-America awards and four RMAC Championships. Prior to Chadron State, Mischke spent 11 seasons as the head track and field coach at Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets produced two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees under his guidance. Mischke was the head coach at St. Cloud State for 12 years. During his tenure at SCSU, the Huskies had 44 All-Americans and one national champion.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE HORNETS
Emporia State has seven provisional qualifiers for the National Championships. 
Ezekiel Seamster is fourth in the nation in the men's 100m and 19th in the 200m.  Connor Deters is tenth nationally in the shot put.  Max Neeley is ranked 17th in the pole vault and Israel Domeh is 20th in the 200m.  Brooks Lowe rounds out the Hornet men's qualifiers at 24th in the javelin.
Barbara Bentum is ranked ninth and Stella Agbokpah is 17th in the women's 200m.

HOW TOUGH IS IT?
There are seven MIAA men's teams and five women's teams ranked in the first week of the United State's Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Ratings. The Hornet men are ranked #44 while the Emporia State women are ranked#79 nationally.

UP NEXT
The Hornets travel to El Dorado, Kan. next weekend for the Grizzly Gold Invite hosted by Butler CC. It will be the first time Emporia State has sent a full team on the road this spring.
PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS
The Hornets have seven athletes with eight provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
Ezekiel Seamster is ranked fourth in the nation and third all-time at Emporia State in the 100m after running a 10.29 at the ESU Spring Open. He is also ranked 19th in the 200m with a time of 21.07 at the ESU Spring Open.
Connor Deters is ranked tenth in the nation in the men's shot put after going 17.20m (56-05.25) at the ESU Spring Open. He now sets fifth all-time at Emporia State in the event.
Max Neeley cleared 4.95m (16-02.75) in the men's pole vault at the ESU Spring Open to rank 17th in the nation.
Israel Domeh ran a provisional qualifier of 21.09 to win the men's 200m. He is currently ranked 20th in the nation.
Brooks Lowe threw a provisional qualifying mark of 63.67m (208-11) in the men's javelin at the ESU Spring Open. He is currently ranked 21st in the nation.
Barbara Bentum ran the second best time in Emporia State history to win the women's 200m at the Jayhawk Spring Fling.  Her time of 23.92 makes her just the second Hornet to run under 24 seconds in the event as she trails just Courtney Bruna's 23.83 at the 2004 MIAA Championships.  Bentum is currently ranked #9 in the nation in the 200m. 
Stella Agbokpah is ranked 17th in the women's 200m after running 24.02 at the ESU Spring Open. She is ranked third at Emporia State in the event.

HORNETS IN THE ESU ALL-TIME TOP FIVE OUTDOORS
A total of 18 current Hornets have a combined for 20 top five indoor marks in 15 events all-time at Emporia State with four school records.
Stella Agbokpah has tied the school record in the 100m with a wind aided 11.63 at the ESU Spring Open and ranks third in the 200m after running 24.02 at the ESU Spring Open.
Barbara Bentum is ranked second in the women's 200m with a time of 23.92 set at this year's Jayhawk Spring Fling and ranks fourth in the 100m at 11.71 at the ESU Spring Open. 
Mia Manley cleared 3.87m (12-08.25) at the 2025 ESU Relays to rank second all-time in the women's pole vualt.
Emma Bartholome is ranked fifth with a time of 11:54.30 in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the 2025 Midwest Classic.
Madison Vermetten is ranked fifth with a throw of 52.47m (172-02) in the women's hammer at the 2025 Kansas Relays.
Ty Anderson is the school record holder in the men's 100m at 10.13 at the 2025 NCAA Championships. He is injured and will likely redshirt
Emmanuel Dukpe is the school record holder in the men's 400m with a 46.29 at last year's NCAA Championships.
The 4x400m relay team of Bryson Turner, Israel Domeh, Braden Lipgens, and Emmanuel Dukpe set the school record of 3:06.66 at the 2025 NCAA Championships.
Dylan Hunter is second in the men's 10,000m after running 30:33.44 at the ESU Spring Open this year.
Jonah Remsberg is second in the men's decathlon with 7,033 points and is fifth in the pole vault after clearing 4.75m (15-07) both at the Jo Meaker Multis last year. He is injured and will likely redshirt
Trenden Collins is ranked second in the men's high jump after clearing 2.14m (7-00.25) at the 2024 Concordia Qualifier. He is recovering from a football injury
Max Neeley is second in the men's pole vault after going 5.08m (16-08) at the Loper Twilight last year. 
Ezekiel Seamster is ranked third all-time in the men's 100m with a time of 10.29 at the ESU Spring Open.
Kole Manley is ranked third with a toss of 70.21m (230-04) in the men's javelin at the ESU Relays last year.
Brooks Lowe threw the men's javelin 69.16m (226-11) at the 2025 MIAA Championships to rank fourth all-time at ESU.
Israel Domeh is fifth in the men's 200m at 21.01 at the 2025 Loper Twilight.
Connor Deters moved into fifth in the men's shot put with a mark of 17.20m (56-05.25) at this year's ESU Spring Open.

TRACK TOWN USA - DIVISION II STYLE
Emporia State's Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  It will be the fifth time that Welch Stadium has played host to the national championships.
Welch Stadium previously served as the host site for the National Championships in 1995, 1999, 2006, and 2024 with the first meet in 1995 bringing 450 student-athletes to Emporia. The 2026 meet is scheduled to bring 754 student-athletes, nearly 200 coaches and over 100 officials to the Flint Hills over the Memorial Day weekend.
The 2026 Championships are scheduled for May 21-23.
During championship week, the NCAA Committee will come to Emporia on Monday with the first practice time available on Tuesday.  Wednesday of championship week will see a variety of coaches and officials meetings before the actual competition begin on Thursday.  The meet will wrap up on Saturday evening.
After playing host to the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Emporia State was the site of the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Championships. It was the seventh time Welch Stadium has served as host of the conference championships since 1997.

HORNET RETURNING PROVISIONALS
Ty Anderson was ranked 11th in the nation in the 60m after running a school record 6.68 in the prelims at the MIAA Championships. He finished eighth in the finals with a time of 6.75 at the MIAA Championships. He placed tenth in the 60m at the 2025 Indoor Championships. He was also ranked 35th in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 7.29m (23-11) at the MIAA Championships and 40th nationally with a time of 21.42 in the 200m at the Washburn Open. He will red-shirt this season with an injury.
Jonah Remsberg was ranked tenth in the nation after winning the MIAA Championship in the heptathlon with 5,265 points. He is ranked second all-time at Emporia State in the heptathlon. He was also ranked 46th in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 7.23m (23-8.75) during his heptathlon in Colorado Springs. He will red-shirt this season with an injury.
Connor Deters was 20th in the nation with a mark of 17.38m (57-0.25) in the men's shot put at the Bearcat Invite.
Emmanuel Dukpe was 24th in the nation in the men's 400m after running 47.44 at the MIAA Championships.  
Luke Grace scored a 5,135 points at the MIAA Championships heptathlon to rank 25th in the nation.
Israel Domeh ran 21.26 in the men's 200m at the MIAA Championships to rank 26th in the nation. He turned in a 48.09 at the Bearcat Invite to rank 61st in the nation in the men's 400m. 
Max Neeley went 4.93m (16-2.00) at the Ichabod Invitational to rank 27th in the nation. 
Trenden Collins cleared 2.04m (6-8.25) in the high jump at the Bearcat Invite while Will Allen cleared the same height at the MIAA Championships to both rank 38th nationally. Collins may end up redshirting the track season due to an injury suffered during football season.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Bryson Turner, Israel Domeh, Braden Lipgens and Emmanuel Dupke ran 3:12.36 at the MIAA Championships to rank 17th in the nation.
Isabella Davie scored a total of 3,470 points in the pentathlon at the MIAA Championships. She was ranked 33rd in the nation.
Madison Vermetten threw 17.41m (57-1.50) in the weight throw at the Ichabod Invitational to rank 35th in the nation.

MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The Emporia State men are picked for seventh and the women eighth in the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches Poll. The Pittsburg State men and women are the conference preseason favorites in both polls.
