TOGETHER AT HOME
The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams will both be in action at home this weekend as they play host to nationally ranked Northwest Missouri and Washburn at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. The format for the final home matches will see each team start at the same time and play on three courts each.
LAST SETS
The Hornet women ended their trip west with a 7-0 loss at #48 Neb.-Kearney on Sunday afternoon to settle for a split on the road trip. The Lopers picked up wins at #1 and #2 to secure the first point before
Micaela McSpadden and
Kelsie Burr took a 6-4 win at #3 doubles. Wins at #2, #3 and #4 singles clinched the dual win for Neb.-Kearney.
Viktoria Mackova did go to a third set at #6 before falling 7-4 in a tiebreaker.
The Hornet men fell behind early in a 6-1 loss to Rockhurst in their last action on April 3. Emporia State lost at both #1 and #2 doubles to give Rockhurst the point before
Andy Graf and
Jaden Tredway stormed back to win six straight games and take a 7-5 victory at #3 doubles. The Hawks would win the first five singles matches to clinch the overall dual.
Sergio Vera posted a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) victory for the Hornets.
THE COACH
Les Stafford is 17-19 with the women and 14-15 with the men in dual match play in his third year as the head coach at his alma mater. He is 195-162 in 18 years overall as a head women's coach. Stafford was the head coach of the Wichita State women from 1990-2004 and was a four-time conference coach of the year for the Shockers. He went 178-143 four conference tournament championships and one regular season title. He spent 15 years as the head tennis pro at Crestview Country Club in Wichita. Stafford was a four-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier during his career with the Hornets. As a senior in 1981, he won the CSIC #1 singles and #1 doubles championship. Stafford ended his career by winning three doubles matches and one singles match in his final appearance at the national tournament.
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
The Emporia State women are 6-8, 2-3 in the MIAA.
Micaela McSpadden has played all 14 matches at #1 singles and is 5-9 overall. Victoria Mackova is 6-6 overall with a 5-5 record at #6 singles.
Karen Santiago Sanchez is 5-8 at #3 singles with a 3-2 record in MIAA play.
Anastasia Pesic and
Paige Stranghoner are 6-6 at #2 doubles.
Kelsie Burr and McSpadden are 5-5 at #3 doubles.
The Emporia State men are 5-5, 1-0 in the MIAA with three of their losses to nationally ranked teams.
Harrison Brown has played nine matches at #1 singles.
Sergio Vera is 4-0 at #5 singles and 6-2 overall.
Theo Belmonte is 5-4 on the year with a 3-0 mark at #4 singles.
Jaden Tredway is 5-4 on the season. The Hornets have used nine different combinations in doubles with Belmonte and Vera going 5-5 overall with a 3-2 record at #2 doubles.
ABOUT THE BEARCATS
The Northwest Missouri women are 12-7, 2-2 in the MIAA and ranked #41 in the nation.
The Bearcat men are 11-4, 2-0 in the MIAA and ranked #32 nationally.
SERIES HISTORY
The Bearcat women have won nine of the last ten meetings with Emporia State picking up a 5-4 win in 2014.
Emporia State has not defeated the Northwest Missouri men since the MIAA went to dual meet competition.

The Washburn women are 10-9, 4-0 in the MIAA and ranked #66 in the nation.
The Ichabod men are 14-4, 1-1 in the MIAA and raned #14 nationally.
