Nine Hornet Tennis Players Earn MIAA Academic Honors

Six men and three women named to Academic Honor Roll

June 9, 2026 – Diego Calvo and Anton Sarunic were named MIAA Scholar Athletes, to highlight nine Emporia State tennis student-athletes that were recognized by the conference for the academic accomplishments.

Calvo and Sarunic were named Scholar Athletes after earning All-MIAA-GAC honors this spring. Sarunic earned Second-Team All-MIAA-GAC honors in singles after going 3-2 in North Division action in singles.  The senior from Opatija, Croatia was 3-1 in the Association at the #2 spot. Calvo was named honorable mention All-MIAA/GAC in singles after going 3-2 in the North Division at #3 and #2 singles.

A Scholar-Athlete must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 or better at the certifying member institution and have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution. Student-athletes must also receive All-MIAA honors in the 2026 season to achieve the full Scholar-Athlete status. 

A total of six men and three women were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for Emporia State.

Calvo and Sarunic were joined by Alexis Mattenberger, Gwendal Mazuay, Duvan Santiago Torres and Luke West on the Academic Honor roll for the men. Giovanna Ferreira, Yulima Klimova and Sheriden Wichman were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the Emporia State women.

To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
 
These academic awards do not include first-year freshmen or first-year transfers. The MIAA will release its Newcomer Academic Awards from the 2025-26 academic year later this month.
