Emporia State men and women drop 4-3 road decisions on Friday

Hornet men fall 4-3 at Augie, women lose 4-3 at Northeastern State

April 24, 2026-Both the Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams fell in 4-3 decisions on the road on Friday.  The Hornet men lost 4-3 to Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. while the women fell 4-3 to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla.
 
Women NSU 4, ESU 3
Doubles
The Hornets came from behind to capture the doubles point.  Northeastern State won 6-3 at #3 to start the dual.  Giovanna Ferreira and Carla Paul Piquer evened things with a 6-3 victory at #1 singles, their third straight MIAA win. Erin Cahill and Giulia Russu clinched the first point with a 6-4 win at #2 doubles.
Singles
The RiverHawks picked up wins at #2, #3 and #4 singles to go up 3-1 before Giulia Russu won 6-3, 7-5 at #6 singles for the Hornets.  Ferreira fell in three sets at #1 as NSU clinched the win. Erin Cahill finished the dual with a 7-5, 6-0 at #5 singles for the final score.
 
Men Augie 4, ESU 3
The Hornets won the doubles point and the first set in four of the six singles matches but could not pull out the win in a 4-3 loss at Augustana.
Doubles
Emporia State won the doubles point with a 7-5 win by Anton Sarunic and Diego Calvo at #1 and a 7-6 win at #3 by Alexis Mattenberger and Dhruveer Grover.
Singles
Four of the six singles matches went to a third set and the other two featured a tiebreaker. Sarunic fell 7-6, 6-2 at #1 but Gwendal Mazuay put the Hornets back on top with a 6-2, 7-6 win at #6. Calvo picked up a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 win at #2 singles. Mattenberger fell 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 at #3 and Duvan Santiago Torres dropped a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 decision at #4 singles. Grover retired at #5 singles trailing 3-6, 7-6, 4-0.
