2021-22 ESU WITF Jenna Ramsey 5000m at MIAA Indoor Championships

Women's Track and Field | 2/26/2022 9:38:00 PM

February 26, 2022-Jenna Ramsey continued her dominance in the distance races as she won the MIAA Championship in the 5000m to highlight Saturday's action for Emporia State at the MIAA Indoor Championships in Maryville, Mo.

Ramsey broke the MIAA Indoor Championships record with a time of 16:57.20 to win teh 5000m. She broke Missouri Southern's Kimi Shanks record of 16:59.85 set in 2010 and the facility record of 16:57.46 set by Iowa Western CC's Faith Chepengat in 2020. It is her first indoor MIAA title to go with her championship in cross country last fall and the 10,000m last spring in the outdoor championships. She won the event by over ten seconds over Northwest Missouri's Carol Cunnigham.

The Hornet women also got points in two field events on Saturday.  Megan McManis cleared a provisional qualifying bar of 12-04 (3.76m) to finish fifth in the pole vault while Allie Barrett cleared 11-10 (3.61m) to place seventh.

Alyssa Conway was the other scorer for the Hornets. She threw 54-3.25 (16.54m) to place fifth in the weight throw and in the process passed Melanie Goetz for fifth on the Emporia State all-time list. Goetz threw 53-1.50 at the 2002 MIAA Championships.

Jasmine Hurla just missed the finals in the 600y but her time of 1:25.16 moves her into the top five all-time at Emporia State.  She passed Kristin Brune who ran 1:25.18 at the 2001 MIAA Championships for fifth all-time for the Hornets.

Added to Abigael Reid's fifth place finish in the heptathlon on Friday, the Emporia State women have 23.5 points to rank seventh in the team standings going to Sunday's finals.

Juwan Johnson was the highlight for the Emporia State men.  He qualified for the finals in the 60m with a provisional qualifying time and personal best of 6.82 to finish third in the prelims.  He just missed the finals in the 200m running a time of 21.97 to place ninth.

Johnson was one of three Hornet men who placed ninth and just missed either advancing to the finals or actually scoring on Saturday.  Xavier Hall placed ninth with a time of 8.36 in the 60m hurdles while Aren Trost finished ninth in the heptathlon with 4,545 points.

The MIAA Championships will wrap up on Sunday with field events starting at noon and running finals at 1:30 p.m. in Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri State.
