HORNET BASEBALL FALLS IN DECIDING GAME OF SERIES TO MISSOURI WESTERN

Minnick and Chaput combine to go 7 for 7 at the plate

April 18, 2021-Missouri Western scored nine runs in the first two innings on the way to a 19-4 win over Emporia State to win the three game series 2-1.

The Griffons scored four runs on three hits in the first and came back with five runs, three of them unearned, in the second.

Emporia State got on the board with a Sam Chaput leadoff homer in the second but Western scored two more in the fourth to go up 11-1. The Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on single by Chaput and walks to Jack Maki and Brigham Mooney but Griffon starter Jacob Weirich struckout the next three batters to leave the bases loaded.

Missouri Western added six runs on just three hits with four walks in the top of the fifth.  Emporia State was able to get two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Cooper Minnick led off with a double and with two outs Chaput and Maki both walked to load the bases.  Mooney followed with a single to right that scored Minnick and Patryck Hernandez walked to fore in Chaput but that would be all as the Kade Graff grounded into a force out as Emporia State left the bases loaded again.

Minnick manufactured a run for the Hornets in the sixth as he doubled with one out, stole third and scored on an RBI ground out by Christian Roduner.  The Griffons added two more in the top of the seventh and Emporia State could only muster a Chaput single in the bottom of the inning.

Cooper Minnick went four for four with four stolen bases, three doubles and two runs scored while Sam Chaput was three for three with an RBI, two runs scored, a home run and a stolen base.  The rest of the lineup went just one for 21 but did draw seven walks.

Emporia State will travel to Northeastern State next weekend for a three game series, starting with a double header on Saturday.  First pitch from Tahlequah, Okla. is set for 11:00 a.m.
