HOME OPENER
The Hornets are scheduled to make their 2020 home debut against #17 Augustana on Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.

LAST AT BAT
Emporia State split a four game series at Metro State last weekend.  In the opener Jake Barton scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings with 11 strikeouts and four walks to extend his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 17.0 to start the season. Emporia State trailed 6-1 after three innings before rallying for a 9-6 victory in the seven inning nightcap on Saturday. On Sunday the Roadrunners blew game one open with five runs in the bottom of the eighth on the way to an 11-0 win. Metro State used four extra base hits in the series finale to post a 7-2 win.

THE COACHES
Seth Wheeler is 33-26 in his second season as the Hornets head coach. This will be his first meeting with Augustana.
Tim Huber  is 410-207 in his 12th season at Augustana. He is 1-1 against Emporia State.

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 6-4 on the season. As a team they are ranked fifth in the league with a .387 on base percentage while ranking sixth in team ERA, eighth in batting and ninth in fielding. Blake Carroll is in the top ten of the MIAA in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored, home runs and stolen bases. Jake Barton has not allowed an earned run in 17.0 innings to start the season and ranks third in the MIAA with 29 strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Augustana was ranked #17 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll and is 2-2 after splitting a four game series to open the season at #24 Ark.-Monticello. They are batting .262 as a team with a 4.70 team ERA and a .992 fielding percentage. Jordan Barth is batting .429 with a 1.038 OPS after four games. Tanner Brown is 1-0 after tossing 5.0 shut out innings, allowing two hits while striking out five.

The Hornets lead the all-time series 3-1 with two of the games coming in NCAA Tournament play.

LAST TIME AGAINST AUGUSTANA
Emporia State got another stellar performance from MIAA Pitcher of the Year Seth Holman, but had three errors that led to two unearned runs in a 4-2 loss to #11 Augustana in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Central Regional Baseball Tournament in Magnolia, Ark. Holman allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 8.0 innings. He was relieved by Max Simpson in the top of the ninth of a 2-2 tie. Simpson allowed two runs, with only one earned, on one hit to take the loss. Mason Brown was two for four with a run and an RBI while Kaden Shaffer went two for four with an RBI. Bryce Fischer was one for three with a double, a walk and a run scored.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will travel to Enid, Okla. on Tuesday, February 25 to take on Southwestern Oklahoma in a neutral site contest. First pitch from David Allen Ballpark is set for 2:00 p.m.
