CHAMPIONSHIP TIME
The Emporia State tennis teams begin the championship portion of the schedule this weekend at the MIAA Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. This is the first time both teams have advanced to the MIAA Tournament since the 2017.
LAST SERVE
The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams were edged by Newman in Wichita. Shannen Meyer and Viktoria Mackova picked up the only win in doubles with a 6-3 victory at #3 as the Hornet women trailed 1-0 going to singles play. Cyrielle Peyroche won 6-4, 6-3 at #3 singles while Jessica Purdy and Mackova each picked up wins in tiebreakers. Purdy won 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 at #1 while Mackova won 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at #2 singles. Those were not enough though as Silvana Caceres and Meyer each dropped third set tiebreakers. Caceres fell 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 at #5 and Meyer lost 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 at #6. Karen Santiago played up at #4 singles and lost 6-1, 6-3.
The Hornet men lost at #2 and #3 doubles to drop the doubles point and with rain moving in the #1 match was left unfinished with ESU trailing 4-3. Emporia State won the top three singles matches with Charles Gortzounian winning 7-6, 6-3 at #1, while Gerard Pont and Taylor Nelson each won in three sets. Pont won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at #2 as Nelson picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 singles. Lukas Winkler lost 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles and Luis Maia fell 6-4, 6-3 at #6. Andy Graf was trailing 6-3, 3-6, 3-2 when he retired.
THE COACH
Marco Goles Babic is in his first year as interim coach at Emporia State after serving as a graduate assistant last season. He competed one year at Ohio State and three years at San Diego State. He finished his four year career with a singles record of 56-25. After spending the fall of 2017 competing on the professional tour, Goles Babic currently holds an ATP ranking in both singles and doubles.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
The Emporia State women are 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the MIAA. They earned the six seed in this year's MIAA Tournament after missing last year's tourney. Karen Santiago is 10-3 on the year with a 7-1 mark in MIAA play. She is 6-2 at #5 singles with a 4-0 mark at #6. Jessica Pury and Cyrielle Peyroche are 5-4 at #1 doubles with a 2-3 mark in MIAA play.
The Emporia State men are 7-7 on the year and 1-3 in the MIAA. They are the four seed in the MIAA Tournament after missing the tournament last year. Charles Gortzounian is 9-5 on the season with a 1-3 mark in MIAA play. He is 8-5 playing at #1 singles. Gortzounian and Taylor Nelson are 10-3 in doubles and went 3-1 in MIAA action, all at the #2 position.
ABOUT THE GREEN BEARCATS
The Northwest Missouri women are 13-5, 6-3 in the MIAA and are the three seed in this year's tournament. They are ranked #23 in the latest ITA Team Rankings.
LAST TIME VS. NORTHWEST MISSOURI
Emporia State fell 5-2 at Northwest Missouri. Viktoria Mackova and Karen Santiago won 6-4 at #2 for Emporia State's lone win in doubles. The Hornets team points came when Jessica Purdy won 7-5, 6-4 at #1 singles and Karen Santiago pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 victory at #5 singles.
ABOUT THE PURPLE BEARCATS
The Southwest Baptist men are 14-2, 4-0 in the MIAA and the one seed. They are ranked #11 in the nation in the latest ITA Team Rankings.
LAST TIME VS. SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
Emporia State was shut out 7-0 at Southwest Baptist. Charles Gortzounian had the best showing for the Hornet men as he took #32 Adham Gaber to three sets before losing 6-1, 6-7 (7-1), 6-0 at #1 singles.
