TURNPIKE TUSSLE
The Hornets travel to Lawrence, Kan. for Softballs first Turnpike Tussle meeting with Washburn at Lawrence Free State HS on March 16. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
LAST AT BAT
Emporia State got their first MIAA win of the season with a 9-1 run-rule win over Lincoln in five innings. The Hornets got on the board first and never trailed in the game. In the bottom of the first inning, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead before the Blue Tigers only run came on a home run in the top of the second. The Hornets extended their lead in the bottom of the third with four runs to take a 6-1 lead after three complete. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hornets capped off scoring as Cassidy Beem got a three run home run to give the Hornets the 9-1 lead that they would hold for the win. The Hornets had eight hits in the game led by Cassidy Beem with two hits, one run and three rbi. Montana Messler pitched the complete game going 5.0 innings allowing just one hit and one run with nine strikeouts.

THE COACHES
April Huddleston-Rosales is 90-103 in her fourth year as the head coach at Emporia State. She served as an assistant for seven seasons. She was a member of both the Hornets national runner-up teams in 2006 and 2008, and was named First Team All-MIAA at shortstop her senior year.
Brenda Holaday is 75-57 in her third year as head coach for the Ichabods.

Emporia State is 5-13 on the season. Kenzie Garvin leads the Hornets with a .343 batting avg. and 23 hits. Cassidy Beem has 14 rbi with three home runs while Hannah Steeby adds 11 rbi and four home runs. Montana Mesler has pitched six complete games with 53 K's in 55.0 innings.
SCOUTING WASHBURN
The Ichabods are 11-13 on the season, 4-0 in the MIAA. Savannah Moore leads the team with a .427 batting average, 35 hits and 26 rbi. Samantha Stallbaumer has 22 runs scored for the Ichabods. Raegen Hamm has pitched 75.1 innings with a 2.69 era.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE ICHABODS
Emporia State defeated Washburn 3-0 in the first round of the 2018 MIAA tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Hornets started scoring early in the game as Kenzie Garvin scored on a two out double from Danielle Sprinkle in the top of the first. McKenna Davis followed with an rbi single before scoring on a single from Kelsey Phillips. The Hornets would hold this 3-0 lead through seven innings for the 3-0 win.

HORNETS AT THE BAT
Left fielder, Kenzie Garvin has a .343 batting avg with 23 hits and nine runs this season. She played in 61 games, starting in 60 for the Hornets in 2018. She finished the season with a .301 batting average on 58 hits with 44 runs.
Second Base, Gabby Biondo has a .294 batting avg. with eight runs on ten hits and two rbi. She has played in nine game, starting in four for the Hornets this season. In 2018, she appeared in 28 games for the Hornets.
Catcher, Cassidy Beem has 13 runs on 19 hits with 14 rbi and a batting avg of .333 this season. She started in 56 of the 57 games she played in last season. She finished the season with 14 runs and 13 rbi on 20 hits.
Center fielder, Hannah Steeby has a .289 batting avg with 13 runs on 13 hits including four home runs and 11 rbi. She transferred from Central Methodist University. In 2018, she earned first-team All-American honors from the NFCA and NAIA and was the Heart of America Conference Player of the Year.
Designated player/pitcher, Kelsey Phillips has scored nine runs and has nine rbi for the Hornets this season. She played in 31 games, starting in 25 for the Hornets in 2018. She finished the season with a .394 with 16 runs on 26 hits.
Short-stop, Destiny Ojigoh has a batting avg of .254 with eight runs on 15 hits and nine rbi. She played and started in 55 games for the Hornets in 2018. She held a .272 batting average with 18 runs on 40 hits. She tacked on three home runs with 34 rbi.
First base, Rachel Kauss has two runs and seven rbi on 14 hits with a batting avg on .275. She played in 13 games for the Hornets in 2018. In 16 at bats she had five hits and scored two runs with a .313 batting average.
Right fielder, Valerie Kinney is batting .233 with seven hits and two rbi including one solo home run. She has started eight of the 11 games she has played this season. In 2018, she appeared in 25 games for the Hornets with a batting average of .293 in 58 at-bats.
Third base, Kailee Odegard has a .313 batting avg. with seven runs on seven hits for the Hornets. She has started in nine of the ten games she has played in her freshman season with the Hornets.
EMPORIA STATE PITCHING
Montana Mesler is 3-7 with six complete games. She has thrown 55.0 innings with a 4.75 era and 53 K's. She finished the 2018 season with a 15-13 record in 37 appearances with 31 starts. She threw 20 complete games with a 4.58 era and 124 K's in 198.1 innings.
Sydney Righi is 0-4 in five starts for the Hornets. She has an era of 9.55 through 21.2 innings with eight K's. She was 11-5 with a 2.91 era at Blue Springs South HS in her senior season.
Kelsey Phillips is 2-2 with seven appearances and three starts. She has thrown 26.1 innings with a 6.49 era and 14 K's. She finished the 2018 season with a 10-11 record in 30 appearances with 18 starts. She threw nine complete games with a 4.95 era and 54 K's in 125.1 innings.
THE HORNETS WITH ROSALES
Rosales is in her fourth season as head coach at Emporia State. She holds an 90-103 overall record, 38-40 in the MIAA after taking over in November of 2015 with no seniors on the roster.
In 2018, Rosales led the Hornets to the MIAA Tournament championship and her first trip to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament as head coach. The Hornets finished the regular season on a nine game winning streak and extended that to a 12 game streak in the MIAA Tournament. Emporia State advanced to the Central Regional championship game against Minnesota-Duluth. Â
In 2017, Rosales made her first appearance in the MIAA Tournament as head coach, going 4-2 and finishing second, losing to #1 seed Central Oklahoma in the championship game. She led the Hornets to their first MIAA Tournament championship appearance since 2013.
In 2016, Rosales led the Hornets to a 21-32 record, 9-17 in the MIAA in her first season as head coach. Prior to the season, she was selected as the tenth head coach for the Hornets and took over the role in November of 2015.
Before accepting the head coaching role, she had served as an assistant coach for the Hornets the previous seven seasons under both coach Kristi Bredbenner and Julie LeMaire after her all-conference playing career at Emporia State.
