EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL SPLITS DH AT MISSOURI SOUTHERN

Ssecond straight day with eight run win in opener, followed by loss in night cap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 March 10, 2018- Emporia State split their doubleheader matchup against Missouri Southern on Saturday in Joplin, Mo.  The Hornets had a pair of five-run innings in their 12-4 win in game one and fell 6-2 in game two to finish 2-2 on their weekend road trip. 
 
ESU 12, MSSU 4
The Hornets scored in the first inning for the 14th time in 21 games this year, scoring five runs in the top of the first.  The Hornets scored their runs on a two-run double from Hailey Cope, followed by RBI doubles off the bats of Danielle Sprinkle and Destiny Ojigoh.  Katy Rae Nordman singled home Annie Rockley to give the Hornets an early 5-0 lead.  The Lions would pick up two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the two teams would trade outs for the next two innings.  In the top of the fourth, the Hornets would take advantage of a Missouri Southern error as Kenzie Garvin scored from third to give the Hornets a 6-2 lead.  The Hornets would get another run in the top of the sixth inning as McKenna Davis would come around to score after leading off the inning with a single.  After the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Hornets had another five-run inning in the top of the seventh.  Ojigoh and Davis would each pick up RBI singles and Garvin brought home two runs on a single to right field.  Davis would come home to score on an error to extend the Hornets' lead to 12-3.  The Lions would pick up a run in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be it as the Hornets took game one by a score of 12-4. 
 
Kenzie Garvin was three for four at the plate with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Danielle Sprinkle had two hits on two doubles and an RBI.  Hailey Cope was one for four with two RBI, a double, and a stolen base.  Destiny Ojigoh was two for three at the plate with two RBI and a double.  McKenna Davis and Katy Rae Nordman each had two hits and an RBI.  Montana Mesler picked up her fourth win of the year after pitching six innings to go with three strikeouts. 
 
MSSU 6, ESU 2
In game two, the two teams would put up zeroes through the first three innings.  In the top of the fourth, the Hornets got on the board with a one-out RBI single from Danielle Sprinkle to take a 1-0 lead.  The Lions would respond by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.  The Hornets would load the bases in the top of the fifth, but would leave the runners stranded.  The Lions added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Hornets trailed 6-1.  In the top of the seventh, the Hornets would score a run on an RBI sac fly from Caitlin VanVleck, but that would be their final run as the Hornets fell 6-2.
 
McKenna Davis was one for two at the plate with two walks and a stolen base.  Danielle Sprinkle drove in her 21st RBI of the season.  Caitlin VanVleck had an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. 
 
Destiny Ojigoh started the game in the circle as she pitched 3.2 innings.  Kelsey Phillips pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief for the Hornets.     
 
Emporia State travels to St. Joseph, Mo. to play in the MWSU Hy-Vee Classic.  The Hornets play games against Minnesota-Duluth and Winona State on March 16, Minnesota State and Mary on March 17, and Wayne State and Northern State on March 18.
