EMPORIA STATE MEN CAPTURE TEAM TITLE AT PAPA JOHN'S CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

September 22, 2017-The Emporia State men placed eight runners in the top 20 overall to capture the team title at the Papa John's Invitational presented by Uncommon Threads. The Hornet women finished in fifth place overall.
 
Brian Newkirk ran 25:52.53 to place fourth overall and lead the Hornets to the championship of their home meet.  He was joined in the top 15 by Gabe Sams in 11^th at 27:18.45 and Cole Bosley at 27:26.05 to finish 13^th overall.  Thomas LaRoche ran 27:35.10 to place 16^th and was followed immediately by Aaron Taylor in 27:35.10 for 17^th and Grant Knoll in 18^th at 27:52.69.  Jared Reinke rounded out the top 20 finishers for the Hornets in 27:57.22 to place 20^th on the eight kilometer course.
 
The Emporia State women placed their top five runners within one minute of each other led by Leah Nelson in 21:22.66 for 29^th place.  She is the third different woman to lead the Hornets in their three meets this year.  She was followed by Kelsey Graber in 38^th at 21:54.11 and Nora Wheatley in 39^th at 21:54.39.  Devyn Smith placed 43^rd in 22:05.46 while Christina Wankum rounded out the scorers in 49^th at 22:22.13 over the five kilometers.
 
Emporia State will take next weekend off from competition before returning to action on October 7 at the Haskell Invitational on Saturday, October 7 in Lawrence, Kan.
