CHAMPIONSHIP TIME
The Emporia State men and women both begin play in the MIAA Championship Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. The women are seeded seventh and will take on second seeded Southwest Baptist at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Arpil 18. The Hornet men are seeded fourth and take on regular season champion and top seeded Northwest Missouri at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19 in a rematch of the final regular season dual for Emporia State. All matches will be played at the Sid & Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska.
LAST TIME OUT
The Emporia State tennis teams were swept at Northwest Missouri last Wednesday afternoon in Maryville, Mo.
Both teams were able to get a win in doubles. The men's team of Matheus Mota and Lukas Winkler won 9-7 at #1 doubles while the women's #1 team of Tawni Griffey and Camila Ramos won 8-2.
Griffey then gave the Emporia State women their other point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #1 singles.
THE COACH
John Cayton is in his 12th season as the head coach at Emporia State and 13th season as a collegiate head coach. He is 162-86 with the ESU women and 104-109 with the Hornet men for a combined record of 266-195 at his alma mater. He is a combined 292-209 in 13 years as a head coach of men's and women's collegiate tennis. He was named the North Central Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2007 after leading ESU to a 16-3 overall mark, the MIAA Championship and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. He has taken four women's teams and two men's teams to the NCAA tournament.
ESU WOMEN AT A GLANCE
The Emporia State women are 7-9 overall and 3-6 in the MIAA. They have lost two duals by a 5-4 score including one in MIAA play. Tawni Griffey is 11-5 on the year at #1 singles with a 5-4 record in MIAA play. Sarah Durham was playing #2 singles and had a 7-6 on the season with a 5-2 record in the MIAA before suffering a season ending knee injury. Tahlia Walsh has moved up to #2 after playing primarily at #3 this season. She is 5-9 on the year with a 3-5 MIAA record. Camila Ramos was 6-6 at #4 singles and is 6-9 overall with a 4-5 record in MIAA play. Griffey and Ramos have gone 8-7 at #1 doubles and have won four straight matches.
SCOUTING SBU WOMEN
The Bearcats are 15-2 overall and went 8-1 in the MIAA. They are ranked #16 in the ITA National Rankings and are second in the latest NCAA Central Region Rankings.
LAST SERVE VS. SBU
The Emporia State women lost 9-0 to then #11 Southwest Baptist on March 20. Tawni Griffey at #1, Sarah Durham at #3 and Lori Ahuja at #6 all had a 7-5 set in singles play.
ESU MEN AT A GLANCE
The Emporia State men are 10-6 overall, 2-3 in the MIAA and are fifth in the NCAA Central Regional Rankings. Five of the eight Hornets have winning records in singles and all eight are within one game of .500 on the season. Gerard Pont is 8-7 on the year with a 6-7 record at #1 and a 1-4 mark in MIAA play. Oliver Dixon is 7-8 overall with a 5-8 mark at #2 singles and a 1-4 MIAA record. Patrick Cameron is 8-5 on the season, 5-5 at #3 and had a 1-3 record in MIAA play. He is scheduled to make his first appearance since retiring with an ankle injury against Washburn. Farhan Sadique is 8-6 on the season with a 6-4 record at #5 singles. He is 2-3 in MIAA play. Anton Levanovich is 9-3 overall and went 6-2 at #6 singles. He had a 2-3 MIAA record. Cameron and Matheus were 7-4 at #1 doubles on the year with an 8-4 overall record. They were 2-2 in the MIAA.

The Hornets lost 8-1 at #18 Northwest Missouri last Wednesday in Maryville, Mo. Matheus Mota and Lukas Winkler won 9-7 at #1 doubles for the lone point.
