April 13, 2017 - The #14 Emporia State baseball team claimed the first game of the three game series against Northeastern State with a 6-5 win. The Hornets are now 29-8 on the season, 18-5 in the MIAA.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings before Emporia State took a 3-0 lead with the help from a two RBI single from Mack Gowing in the top of the fourth. The RiverHawks answered in the bottom of the inning with a two run home run to close the gap 3-2. Bryce Davenport had a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth and tie the game at three runs a piece.
The Hornets scored another two runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead again, this time 5-3. Levi Ashmore had a solo home run to left field to give Emporia State a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, Gowing had another single, this time a single run making its way home to put Emporia State up 5-3. The RiverHawks answered in the bottom of the eighth with two runs of their own to tie the game at five runs a piece.
Kaden Shaffer had a solo home run to left center in the top of the 11th inning to secure the win 6-5. Matt Slauter pitched the final inning for the Hornets, going three up three down to finish the game.
Shaffer and Gowing each hit two for five, Gowing with three RBI and Shaffer with two RBI. Nathan Whitcomb pitched 2.1 innings for the win, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk.
The #14 Hornets will continue the series against the RiverHawks on Friday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m.
