#13 HORNET BASEBALL TAKES LARGE LEAD LATE IN 14-2 WIN OVER QUINCY

Eight runs in the top of the ninth solidifies Emporia State win

March 5, 2017 - The #13 Hornet baseball team had eight runs in the ninth inning en route to a 14-2 win over Quincy Sunday afternoon. Emporia State took the series 2-1 over the Hawks and improved to 13-3 on the year.

The Hornets were the first to score when BJ Dean hit a two run single through the left side in the first inning. After both teams went scoreless through the next two innings, Quincy tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning. Emporia State scored another two runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to give them an 6-2 lead.

Emporia State rallied in the top of the ninth to cushion their lead, scoring eight runs off seven hits. Ryan McBroom started the rally with a double down the left field line, scoring Wade Hanna and Levi Ashmore. Mack Gowing followed with a single to left field, scoring McBroom and extending the lead 9-2. Alex White had a single to right field, plating Gowing. Dean wrapped up the inning with a grand slam to left center.

Dean had six RBI on two hits followed by White who hit three for four with three RBI. Mason Brown went three for five while Daniel LaMunyon hit two for five with two runs and two RBI. McBroom had two runs and two RBI, going two for four at the plate. Tanner Cairns improved to 3-0 on the season, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing only two runs on ten hits. Cairns had two strikeouts and no walks. Layne Downing and Nathan Whitcomb threw the final three innings, combining for just one hit with no walks.

The #13 Hornets return to Emporia for a five game home stand beginning with a rematch against Newman. First pitch will be at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7 on Glennen Field at Trusler Sports Complex.
