March 10, 2017 – Seth Holman took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the #13 Hornets defeated Missouri Southern 2-0, scoring their two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Emporia State improves to 14-3 and 4-0 in the MIAA.
The game began with nine up and nine down for both teams until the Lions notched the first two runners of the game with back to back walks in the top of the fourth inning. The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning.
The Hornets started the bottom of the eighth with a Wade Hanna walk. Levi Ashmore bunted Hanna over to give the Hornets a runner on second with one out. Ryan McBroom reached on an error by Missouri Southern's second baseman to advance Hanna to third. With runners on the corners, Mack Gowing would hit a sac fly to left field to give the Hornets the first run of the game. Jonny Hodges singled to the shortstop, plating McBroom to give the Hornets a two-run lead heading into the top of the ninth.
Seth Holman lost his no-hitter in the top of the eighth with one out by a single down the third base line by Missouri Southern's Mike Million who was thrown out at second by Hanna on the same play. Holman picked up his fourth win of the season by allowing two hits with six strikeouts in eight innings of work. Nathan Whitcomb got his fourth save of the season by downing the Lions in order in the top of the ninth inning.
The Hornets and Lions will play on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Trusler Sports Complex.
