March 28, 2017 - The #9 Hornets had eight runs on seven hits in the top of the second inning on their way to a 13-4 victory over Missouri Western. Emporia State tied the season series at a game a piece and will finish the series next week at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 on Glennen Field.
SCORING IN THE SECOND
The Griffons took an early lead, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first inning to go up 1-0 headed into the second. The Hornets answered back with eight runs on seven hits to take a 8-1 lead after two. Ryan McBroom led off the inning with a solo home run, his sixth of the season. Kaden Shaffer followed with a double before Mack Gowing would walk. Taylor Sanagorski reached base on a throwing error off a bunt to load the bases with no outs and force a Missouri Western pitching change. Hanna Wade had an RBI single as the first batter against the new pitcher followed by a Levi Ashmore walk. Alex White then had an RBI fielder's choice but because of another fielding error, there were still no outs in the inning. Mason Brown followed with a single through the right side to bring in another run. Later in the inning, the Hornets had batted around to McBroom who had an RBI single to right field. Shaffer followed with his second double of the inning, this time picking up an RBI.
SCATTERED RUNS
Emporia State scored another run in the third inning and three more in the sixth inning. One more run was added in the seventh inning to secure the 13-4 win over Missouri Western.
BY THE NUMBERS
Brown hit four for six on the afternoon joined by Sanagorski going three for four. Shaffer hit three for five including two doubles, both in the second inning. McBroom hit two for five with two runs and two RBI. White also had two runs and two RBI on the day. Nathan Gieber picked up his first win of the season, going 4.0 innings with only four runs on seven hits. Gieber had two strikeouts and no walks. Relief pitchers Brendan Janes, Trey Taylor, Tyler Buss and Jacob Tetuan allowed no runs on five hits for the remaining five innings.
NOTES
Wade Hanna's one run scored on the day ties him with Kevin Wempe for fourth on the Emporia State all-time list with 155 career runs.
