February 12, 2017 - The #30 Emporia State baseball team finished a sweep of Metro State-Denver with a 3-0 shutout in game three on Sunday afternoon. The Hornet pitching staff allowed only three hits and had seven strikeouts.
Emporia State took an early 1-0 lead after BJ Dean grounded out to second, plating Mack Gowing in the bottom of the first. Both teams went scoreless through the next five innings until a two run seventh for the Hornets. With two outs, Kaden Shaffer scored on a Roadrunner error to put the Hornets up 2-0. Wade Hanna followed with a triple down the right field line, scoring David Oropeza, the final Emporia State run.
The Hornets had seven hits and no errors on the day. Zac Shaw was the only Hornet with multiple hits, going two for three. Jordan Plank picked up his first win to improve to 1-1 on the season. Plank pitched 7.0 innings, allowing only three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Nathan Whitcomb earned the save, pitching the final inning with no hits and a strikeout.
Wade Hanna moved up to ninth on Emporia State's career games played list with 168 games, passing Greg Rogers.
The #30 Hornets continue their home stand next weekend from Feb. 17-19 against #35 Missouri S&T. The first pitch will be on Friday, Feb. 17 at 3:00 p.m. on Glennen Field at Trusler Sports Complex.
