May 1, 2014-For the first time since the 2002 season the Emporia State softball team lost in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, falling 3-2 to Northeastern State. The Hornets then eliminated Central Missouri 6-2 in the second game of the night.

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game when Stephanie Goodwin scored on Kaitlyn Caston's RBI single.  The RiverHawks tied the game on a solo homer from Allyson Pogue and took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning.  Jacie Stephens pulled Emporia State within 3-2 with a solo homer in the fifth but that would be all the scoring.

Eryn Stockman started and took the loss for the Hornets giving up three runs, only one earned, on one hit with three walks in 1.2 innings.  Caston worked the final 5.1, allowing no runs on one hit.

In the nightcap the Hornets jumped on top with a two run homer from Jessica Gragg in the first inning.  After the Jennies cut the lead to 2-1 in the second, Taylor Zordel delivered a two run double to give Emporia State a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.  Goodwin hit a two run home run in the fourth to give the Hornets a 6-1 lead.  Central cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth but left the bases loaded in the inning.  Caston then retired the side in order in the seventh as the Hornets advanced to Saturday.
Goodwin was three for three with two runs and two RBI while Stephens was two for three with a double and two runs scored.

Caston went the distance allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits as she picked up her school record tying 31st win of the season.

The Hornets will play Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m. on Friday in an elimination game between the teams that finished first and second in the MIAA.
