Stephanie Goodwin moved to the top of the order for the Hornets and led off game one with a walk, went to second on Taylor Zordel's bunt single, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch. That would be it for the scoring through the first four innings for both teams. Kaitlyn Caston got out of jams in each of the first three innings, stranding two Lions on base in each of the first three innings. Emporia State broke through with four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Andrea Piezuch's bases loaded triple. Lindenwood was able to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 5-2. Goodwin homered with two outs in the sixth and the Hornets then scored an unearned run to take a 7-2 lead.
Goodwin went two for three with two RBI and three runs scored while Piezuch was two for four with three RBI. Caston went the distance scattering ten hits with two walks and three strikeouts as the Lions scored two runs. With the win she moved her win total to a nation's best 29 victories.
Both teams were scoreless through three innings in the nightcap before Goodwin led off with a single and two outs later scored on Jessica Gragg's single in the fourth. The Hornets busted the game open with four runs on five hits and two hit batters in the top of the seventh. Gragg started things with a lead off triple and came home on Caston's double.
Eryn Stockman went all 7.0 innings to earn her fourth shut out, allowing five hits and three walks with two strike outs. Goodwin, Gragg and Piezuch each had two hits.
The Hornets wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Lincoln. A sweep of the double header in Jefferson City will secure the top seed in the MIAA Tournament for Emporia State.
