Box Score 2 Game 1 box in htmlGame 2 box in htmlApril 19, 2014-The #6 Emporia State softball team split with Southwest Baptist on Senior Day at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won the first game 4-1 but fell 3-0 in nine innings in the night cap.
Kaitlyn Caston picked up her nation's best 28th win of the year in the opener. She did not allow an earned run in 7.0 innings with five strikeouts while giving up just two hits. Andrea Piezuch drove in the Hornets first run with an RBI single in the second and Tricia Vogel came home when Caston reached on an error by the Bearcats shortstop for a 2-0 lead. Southwest Baptist got an unearned run in the fourth to cut the lead in half. In the fifth Madison Rich drove in Taylor Zordel and later scored on Vogel's sac fly to give Emporia State a 4-1 lead.
The nightcap was a pitchers duel for eight innings. Eryn Stockman held Southwest Baptist to just four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in the first 8.0 innings while Kacey Ayers allowed three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in the first 8.0 innings. SBU broke through in the top of the ninth as the first two batters reached and moved up a base on a sac bunt. Tyler Hernandez drove what would be the winning run with a single up the middle and Lyndie Routh followed with a two RBI single to center for a 3-0 lead. Routh was later gunned down at the plate for the final out to prevent the Bearcats from scoring more. The Hornets were then retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as Southwest Baptist broke a 21 game losing streak to Emporia State that dated back to 2003.
The Hornets who are now tied for first with Central Oklahoma, will wrap up the regular season next weekend at Lincoln and Lindenwood.
