Box Score 2 Game one box in htmlGame two box in htmlApril 12, 2014-The #5 Emporia State softball team swept Northeastern State to move back into first place in the MIAA standings with two weeks left in the regular season. The Hornets won game one 8-0 in five innings and took a 5-1 decision in game two.
Stephanie Goodwin continued her hot hitting streak in the first inning of game one with a two run double to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. She then led off the third inning with a single and later scored the first of five runs in the inning.Jacie Stephens had the big hit in the inning with a two run single. Goodwin led off the fourth with a home run that gave the Hornets the eight run spread.
Goodwin was three for three with three RBI and two runs scored. Kaitlyn Caston tossed a one hitter for her 25th win and third shutout of the season.
The Hornets scored in the first inning of the night cap, and Goodwin again had a part in it. She singled up the middle and then scored on Tricia Vogel's single. Northeastern tied the game with a single unearned run in the fourth and Emporia State avoided further damage when the go ahead run was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. Goodwin got another rally started when she doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. She would score the go ahead run on a sac fly by Vogel. Caston gave the Hornets a 4-1 lead with a double that plated two. Emporia State added another run in the sixth when Brenda Novelo hit a pinch hit single and went to second on Rich's single to short right. Goodwin then collected her ninth straight hit over three games on grounder to short. The short stop had no chance to get Goodwin at first but was able to just force Rich at second. Jessica Gragg then singled in Novelo for the final run of the game.
Goodwin ended the game going four for four with two runs scored. Eryn Stockman went the distance allowing an unearned run on six hits.
Emporia State is back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Central Missouri. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
