Box Score 2 Game one box score in htmlGame two box score in htmlApril 11, 2014-In a top 25 battle the #5 Emporia State softball split with #22 Central Oklahoma on Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets fell 3-2 in ten innings in the first game and came back with a 4-2 victory in game two.
The Bronchos scored an unearned run in the top of the first with two outs to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Andrea Piezuch drove in Stephanie Goodwin with a single. UCO retook the lead with a run in the third. Emporia State tied the score with an RBI double from Goodwin that scored Madison Rich.
The Hornets would strand six runners over the next four innings while the Bronchos twice had a runner on third before the game went to the international tie breaker in the tenth inning. UCO went ahead on an unearned run in the top of the tenth and Emporia State had runners first and third with two outs when Tricia Vogel tried to score from third on a ball in the dirt and got caught in a run down to end the inning.
Goodwin went one for four with an RBI and a run scored for the Hornets. Kaitlyn Caston went the distance, allowing just one earned run on nine hits with three strike outs and four walks.
In the nightcap the Bronchos would again break out on top, this time with a solo homer from Ally Dziadula with two outs in the top of the first. The Hornets answered with an RBI single from Jessica Gragg in the bottom of the inning that scored Taylor Zordel. UCO left the bases loaded in the top of the second without scoring and Emporia State took the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Eryn Stockman reached on an error and went to third on Zordel's single and another error. Madison Rich then drove in Stockman for a 2-1 lead.
The Hornets made it 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Caston singled in Gragg with two outs. The Bronchos closed to within 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth. Jacie Stephens led off the bottom of the third with a 15 pitch walk. Hannah Weingartner pinch ran and went to second on Zordel's single. Goodwin then singled up the middle to plate Weingartner and give the Hornets a 4-2 lead. Stockman then worked a perfect seventh, retiring the Bronchos on seven pitches for the win.
Gragg went two for two with an RBI and a run scored while Goodwin was two for three with an RBI. Stockman went the distance allowing two runs on eight hits with three walks.
The Hornets will continue their home stand with a double header against Northeastern State on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
