Box Score 2 Game 1 box score in htmlGame 2 box score in htmlMarch 28, 2014-The #9 Emporia State softball team gave head coach Julie LeMaire her 200th career win with a double header sweep of Washburn on Friday night at the Trusler Sports Complex. Emporia State won game one 9-3 and took the second game 4-0.
The Hornets hit three home runs in the opener on their way to the 9-3 win. Kaitlyn Caston started the scoring with a home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning for Emporia State. Washburn scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Stephanie Goodwin got one of the runs back with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Jessica Gragg then doubled and went stole second before scoring on Andrea Piezuch's sac fly. Caston scored the go ahead run for the Hornets in the sixth on a bunt single by Taylor Zordel. Madison Rich singled in Laura Seeman who had reached on an error. Tricia Vogel then drove in Zordel with a single before Jessica Gragg hit a three run homer to end the scoring.
Gragg went three for four with three RBI and two runs scored with a single,double and home run. Caston was two for three with two runs and two RBI while picking up her nation leading 20th win of the season. She went the distance in the circle allowing three runs, two of them earned on seven hits.
Emporia State got a two hit shutout from freshman Eryn Stockman in the 2-0 win in the nightcap. Zordel scored the first run on a sac fly by Goodwin in the fourth and Vogel doubled to center to plate Rich for a 2-0 lead. Gragg then hit her second home run of the day to center to score Vogel and give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. It was all the offense the Hornets would need as Stockman held the national leader in home runs to just two singles and a walk while striking out five.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday in Topeka for a non-conference double header. First pitch at the Washburn Softball Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
