March 22, 2014-The #12 Emporia State softball team won a top 15 battle with #5 Augustana before falling to Minnesota State-Mankato at the MWSU Invite in St. Joseph, Mo. on Saturday. The Hornets defeated the Vikings 7-1 and fell to the Mavericks 12-4 in six innings.
Playing as the visitor in both games, the Hornets took an early advantage both times. Against Augustana Taylor Zordel led off with a double and Madison Rich walked. Tricia Vogel drove in Zordel and Andrea Piezuch drove home Rich for a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Vikings cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second. Rich scored her second run of the game on an RBI single by Jessica Gragg in the fourth inning. Vogel reached on an error with two out in the sixth and scored on a double by Gragg for a 4-1 lead. An RBI single from Laura Seeman and a two run double by Stephanie Goodwin in the seventh provided the final margin.
Gragg was two for three with two RBI while Piezuch went two for four with an RBI. Goodwin was one for five with two RBI and Rich scored twice on a single and a walk. Kaitlyn Caston picked up the win by scattering five hits with three walks and six strikouts while allowing just one earned run in 7.0 innings.
Zordel reached on an error to open the Minnesota State game and Rich walked before Goodwin hit an RBI single. Vogel made it 2-0 with a sac fly that scored Rich. The Mavericks answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead and added three more in the third for a 6-2 lead. Minnesota State got a two run homer in the fourth and an unearned run in the fifth to go ahead 9-2. Caston, who came on in relief of Eryn Stockman in the fourth, hit a two run homer to pull the Hornets within 9-4 in the top of the sixth. The Mavericks then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the run rule with a 12-4 win.
Gragg was two for three with a run scored while Caston had two RBI with her home run.
The Hornets will wrap up the MWSU Invite with a pair of games on Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo. Emporia State will play Northern State at 12 noon and Wayne State (Neb.) at 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Park.
