March 20, 2014-The #12 Emporia State softball team will return to St. Joseph, Mo. this weekend to take part in the MWSU Invite between MIAA and NSIC teams. The Hornets will play six games including a rematch with #5 Augustana on Saturday.
Emporia State, now 22-5 on the season, will open tournament play on Friday against St. Cloud State at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Pittsburg State in a non-conference contest at 12 noon. The Huskies are 4-7 on the year and lost their opener to the Hornets 2-0 on Feb. 21 in St. Cloud, Minn. The Gorillas are 13-8 on the season.
Saturday the Hornets will begin play at 10:00 a.m. against #5 Augustana. The Vikings are 13-2 on the season and took a 3-2 win over the Hornets on Feb. 23 in St. Cloud, Minn. Emporia State's second game on Saturday will be against Minnesota State-Mankato at 4:00 p.m. The Mavs are 10-6 and lost to Emporia State 8-6 on Feb. 14 in Bentonville, Ark.Â
The final day of the tourney will se Emporia State play Northern State and Wayne State (Neb.) on Sunday. The Hornets will play the 4-6 Wolves at 9:00 a.m. The Hornets will take on the Wildcats, 11-5 on the year, at 1:00 p.m. in another rematch game. Emporia State defeated Wayne State 6-1 on Feb. 22 in St. Cloud.
The Hornets are 22-5 on the year and ranked #12 in the NFCA National Poll. Stephanie Goodwin is batting .379 with three home runs, 19 RBI and 24 runs scored while Tricia Vogel is hitting.358 with four home runs, 22 RBI and 22 runs scored. Kaitlyn Caston is 16-4 in the circle with a 2.80 ERA and is batting .343 with three homers.
