March 18, 2014-The #21 Emporia State softball team ran their winning streak to 12 games before dropping an extra inning affair in the second game of a double header with Winona State on Tuesday in St. Joseph, Mo.  The Hornets won the first game 11-4 and fell 7-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.

Emporia State got three runs in the bottom of the first of game one highlighted by back to back doubles from Stephanie Goodwin and Tricia Vogel.  Winona State scored two runs in the fourth and fifth only to be match by single Hornet runs in the bottom of each inning. The Hornets exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a two run homer from Vogel.

Vogel went three for four with three RBI and two runs scored while Goodwin was two for three with four RBI and two runs scored.  Kaitlyn Caston picked up her 16th win, giving up four runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings in the second game only to see the Warriors chip away with three runs in bottom of the third and single tallies in the fourth and sixth. Winona State won the game with a two run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

Vogel had another big game for the Hornets going two for five with another two run homer.  Goodwin was four for five and scored on Vogel's home run.  Caston pitched the final 2.0 innings in relief of Eryn Stockman and picked up just her fourth loss of the season.

Emporia State is back in St. Joseph this weekend for tournament action beginning on Friday against St. Cloud State at 10 a.m.
