March 15, 2014-The #21 Emporia State softball team swept Neb.-Kearney on Saturday to run their win streak to 11 straight games, but may have lost a player for the season in the process. Second baseman Taylor Reichard suffered a severe ankle injury while sliding into a base in the second game and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
In the first game the Hornets fell behind 3-0 on single runs from the Lopers in the first, second and fifth innings. Emporia State rallied with three unearned runs in the seventh and tied the score on Taylor Zordel's RBI single. Kaitlyn Caston got the game winning RBI in the eighth with a two run single.
The second game was more of an offensive explosion. The Hornets led 10-5 headed into the bottom of the seventh when the Lopers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. After both teams went scoreless in the eighth, Zordel drove in the game winning run when she reached on an error. Stephanie Goodwin followed with a two run double and Tricia Vogel gave the Hornets a four run lead with an RBI double. Goodwin was five of six with four RBI and three runs scored.
The Hornets are scheduled to play Winona State on Tuesday in St. Joseph, Mo. First pitch of the double header is set for 11 a.m.
