Hornets take extra inning win and run rule win over Tigers

March 14, 2014-The #21 Emporia State softball team ran their winning streak to nine games with a double header sweep at #13 Ft. Hays State on Friday.  The Hornets won game one 7-6 in eight innings before taking an 8-0 win in six innings in game two.

Tricia Vogel gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the first with a two RBI double.  The Tigers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first.  Kaitlyn Caston gave Emporia State a 3-2 lead with a solo homer in the second inning.  Ft. Hays State took the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings.  Jessica Gragg helped the Hornets retake the lead with a two run double and then scored on Andrea Piezuch's double.  The Tigers tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded as the team headed to extra innings. Piezuch led off the eighth with a double and scored with two outs on Madison Rich's single to left.

Caston went the distance to pick up her 13th win of the season.  Vogel went three of four with two RBI and a run scored, while Gragg was two of four with two rBI and a run.

The night cap was scoreless through three innings before the Hornets broke the ice with a sac fly in the top of the fourth. Emporia State scored five runs in the fifth with Reichard getting a two run double and Gragg an RBI double in the inning.  The Hornets added two more in the top of the sixth and Eryn Stockman tossed 6.0 shutout innings to envoke the run rule.

Reichard was two for three with two runs and two RBI while Stockman was one for two with a walk and two runs scored. Stockman tossed a three hit shutout to get the win.

Emporia State will travel to Neb.-Kearney on Saturday for a double header with the Lopers.  First pitch from Kearney is set for 12 noon.
