March 11, 2014-The #21 Emporia State softball team won two games against Texas A&M-International in their final at bats, one in late come from behind fashion and one in a run rule. The Hornets won the matinee 5-3 and took the night cap 10-2 in six innings at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The Dustdevils jumped in front early in the first game, scoring two runs on double by Brenda Parnin. The Hornets answered right back with two of their own on an RBI single from Tricia Vogel followed by an RBI double by Jessica Gragg. Brenda Parnin gave TAMU-International a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the third. Gragg opened the Hornets sixth getting hit by a pitch and went to second on a single from Andrea Piezuch. With one out Kaitlin Caston made sure she got a win in the circle by blasting a three run homer to left field for a 5-3 Emporia State lead. Caston then set the Dustdevils down in order in the seventh for the win.
Vogel went two for three with an RBI and a run scored while Caston was officially one for one with the three run homer, but reached base on a walk and hit by pitch. In the circle Caston allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and just one walk.
The second game saw the Dustdevils break on top early again. Doubles from Mariena Gallardo and Anna Parnin prodcued a run in the second and Cassandra DeLeon homered in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. After getting two outs to start the Hornets half of the third Stephanie Goodwin doubled and Taylor Reichard singled her home. Vogel was hit by a pitch and Gragg homered deep to right field to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead. Emporia State got two more runs in the fifth on a Vogel RBI double and a Piezuch RBI ground out. Goodwin hit a three run homer in the sixth for a 9-2 lead. Vogel reached on an error and Gragg hit a double to the gap in right center to score Vogel and end the game by run rule.
Goodwin was four for four with three runs and three RBI, a home run and a double. Gragg went two for four with four RBI and a run scored with a homer and double. Eryn Stockman went the distance in the circle allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeout for her fifth straight win.
The Hornets will travel west this weekend when they go to Ft. Hays State and Neb.-Kearney. The rematch with Ft. Hays State of the 2013 MIAA Tournament Championship game will take place on Friday, March 14 with a first pitch at 4:00 p.m. in Hays, Kan.
