March 10, 2014-The #21 Emporia State softball team came from behind in both ends of a double header sweep of Missouri Western on Monday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won the first game 4-3 and took a 7-3 win in the second game.
Kaitlin Caston had a no-hitter through the first three innings for the Hornets before Tiffany Gillaspy led off the fourth with a home run for the Griffons. Jessica Gragg was hit by a pitch to open the home half of the fourth and one out later Jacie Stephens hit a home run that bounced off Missouri Western's Sydney Washington's glove in left field for a 2-1 lead. Stephanie Goodwin and Andrea Piezuch each had RBI singles in the fifth to give Emporia Stat a 4-1 lead. Things got interesting in the seventh when Kat Steponovich and Michelle Stevenson hit back to back singles and Morgan Ratthmann walked to load the bases with one out. Another walk forced in a run and a second scored when Stevenson was able come home on a fielder's choice when the Hornets could not turn the double play. Caston was then able to coax a ground out to end the inning with the tying run on third.
Caston picked up her 11th win of the season as she went the distance allowing three runs on four hits.
The Griffons got on top early in the night cap with a two run second and added another in the third after the Hornets had answered with two of their own in the bottom of the second. Emporia State took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with four runs. Eryn Stockman helped her own cause in the circle with a two run double that was followed by an other two run double by Madison Rich that gave Emporia State a 6-3 lead. The Hornets added another run in the bottom of the fourth for the 7-3 victory.
Stockman went the distance allowing three runs on four hits while going one for three with three RBI and a run scored in the batters box.
The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday as they play their third double header in three days. Emporia State will play host to Texas A&M-International in a double header beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
