February 8, 2014-The Emporia State softball team opened the 2014 season with a split at the Tarleton Invitational in Stephenville, Texas. The Hornets got a 5-2 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in the season opener before falling 10-2 to Southern Nazarene in the second game of the day.
Laura Seeman got the Hornets on the board for the first time this year with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning against Northwestern Oklahoma. Emporia State scored two unearned runs in the sixth and got two more in the seventh on an RBI double from All-American Taylor Zordel and an RBI single from Tricia Vogel. The Rangers scored two in the bottom of the seventh on a two run home run and had a runner on with one out before Kaitlyn Caston coaxed a double play to end the game.
Vogel was two for four with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Zordel also had a double, run and RBI from the lead off spot while Sydney Owens was two for two with a run scored in the nine hole. Caston went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and allowing one earned run with five walks and three strikeouts.
The Hornets fell behind early in game two against Southern Nazarene, giving up five runs in the first two innings including one unearned and one on an illegal pitch. Emporia State left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first before an Andrea Piezuch homer cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third. The Crimson Storm added two more in the top of the fourth. Vogel's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 7-2 but SNU scored two more in the sixth and another run in the seventh for the final margin of 10-2.
Stephanie Goodwin was three for four with a double while Zordel went one for three with a run scored. Piezuch was one for three with the home run and Vogel had an RBI. Eryn Stockman took the loss, giving up ten runs, seven of them earned, on 12 hits with six walks and four strikeouts.
The Hornets are back in action on Sunday for a single game against Harding. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Stephenville, Texas.
