February 16, 2014-The Emporia State softball team picked up a split on the final day of the 8 States Classic in Bentonville, Ark. to finish 5-1 in the tournament. The Hornets fell to #18 Mo.-St. Louis and defeated Quincy.
Andrea Piezuch scored the only run for the Hornets in the 5-1 loss to UMSL to start the day. She scored when Stephanie Goodwin reached on an error to pull Emporia State within 3-1 in the fifth inning. The Tritons responded with single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh for the 5-1 decision.
Kaitlyn Caston suffered her first loss of the season, allowing five runs, three of them earned on eight hits. Goodwin was the only Hornet with more than one hit, getting a pair of singles.
Tricia Vogel hit a three run home run in the fourth to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead and would prove to be the difference in a 6-2 win over Quincy in the night cap. Laura Seemann and Jacie Stephens also hit RBI doubles for Emporia State in the game. Eryn Stockman picked up her first complete game win of the season. She scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing just two runs.
Emporia State is set to travel to St. Coud, Minn. next weekend to take part in the St. Cloud Indoor Tournament. The Hornets will play four NSIC teams in a key regional weekend.
