January 24, 2014-In the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Meet of the Week, the Emporia State women posted an emphatic 28 point win in the team standings while the men placed third on Friday at the UCM Invite in Warrensburg, Mo.
The Emporia State women had five event champions, three provisional qualifiers and school record on the day. Nikki Wetstein and Carmen King again led the Hornets, combining for four first place and a second place finish.
Wetstein, the reigning MIAA Track Athlete of the Week, broke her own school record with a time of 8.56 to win the 60m hurdles. The time is a provisional qualifier that ranks sixth in the nation. She was also a member of the first place 4x440 relay team. She joined Peyton Weiss, Lindsay Kunkel, and Dominique Staats to run a 4:03.12 to win the event.
King picked up a pair of championships and a runner-up finish for the Hornets. She won the 200m in a time of 26.24 and finished second with a 7.92 in the 60m on the track. Her other championship was a jump of 18-01.00 (5.51m) in the long jump.
The distance medley relay team of Taylor Stueve, Morgan Flowers, Monica Howard, and Emily Schoenfeld had the other first place finish for the Emporia State women.
Morgan Brandt finished second in a jump off at a provisional qualifying height of 5-05.75 (1.67m) in the high jump. Dominique Staats and Carrie Kelly got the toher two runner-up places for the Hornets. Staats finished second in the 600y and Kelly was the runner-up in the triple jump.
Maggie Wilson also had a provisional qualifier for Emporia State, clearing 11-07.75 (3.55m) in the pole vault to place sixth.
The three some of Ryan Dickson, Payson Maydew and Duke Tibbs were the leaders for the Hornet men.
Dickson ran a provisional qualifying time of 22.29 to place second in the 200m and was third with a time of 6.96 in the 60m.
Maydew, an All-American in the decathlon outdoors, won the 60m hurdles with a personal best time of 8.45 and had a personal best of 14-09.00 (4.50m) to place third in the pole vault.
Tibbs just missed a provisional qualifier by .01 seconds as he ran a 49.80 to win the 400m.
Dickson, Maydew and Tibbs combined with Ashton Proctor to run 3:24.43 and win the 4x440 relay.
The Hornets also got second place finishes from Daniel Claassen in the 800m and Jonathan Wernli in the triple jump.
The Emporia State women were ranked #54 in the USTFCCCA preseason rankings and defeated #6 Central Missouri in the team standings. The Hornet men, who were ranked #40 in the USTFCCCA preseason rankings, were third in the team standings behind #15 Central Missouri and #17 Pittsburg State.
Emporia State will train through next weekend before returning to Warrensburg on Feb. 7 and 8 for the UCM Mule Relays.
