TOURNEY TIME  
Emporia State begins the quest for their ninth MIAA Tourney title in the last ten years against Northeastern State.

THE?COACH
Julie LeMaire is 75-27 in her second season at Emporia State. She was named MIAA Coach of the Year after going 20-0 in the MIAA last season, winning the regular season and tournament championships. She is 167-104 in her fifth season as a head coach. She came to ESU after three years at Ft. Hays State and took the Tigers to the MIAA Tournament Championship game in 2011. She is 12-6 in the MIAA Tournament with a 4-0 record at Emporia State.

LAST AT BAT  
Karley Schmelzer tossed 11.0 shut out innings on Sunday but Emporia State could only muster a split with Lindenwood at the Trusler Sports Complex.  Emporia State won game one 8-0 in six innings before falling 2-0 in game two.

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 33-16, 18-10 in the MIAA. They are 7-7 over the last 14 games and have split their last five MIAA double headers. The Hornets are hitting .306 as a team with an MIAA high 88 doubles. Seven players earned All-MIAA honors this season. Amanda Self was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-MIAA at catcher. Taylor Zordel earned first-team honors at short stop while Tricia Vogel was named first-team All-MIAA as a utility player.  Cacy Williams earned second-team All-MIAA and was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year.  Stephanie Goodwin earned second-team All-MIAA honors after being last year's Freshman of the Year. Karley Schmelzer leads the nation in wins with 26 and joins Andrea Piezuch on the honorable mention list.

SCOUTING THE RIVERHAWKS
Northeastern State is 26-22, 16-10 in the MIAA. As a team they are batting .316 with an 3.87 ERA

SERIES HISTORY WITH NSU
Emporia State leads the all-time series 21-16 and have split the last four meetings, all in Tahlequah, Okla.

LAST TIME VS. NORTHEASTERN
Emporia State snapped Northeastern State's eight game winning streak with a 5-1 win before falling 5-4 in game two.

SCOUTING THE BRONCHOS
Central Oklahoma is 39-9, 23-3 in the MIAA and ranked 12th in the NFCA National Poll. They are batting .335 with a 2.83 team ERA.

SERIES HISTORY WITH UCO
The Hornets lead the all-time series 20-14. The last 11 games between the two have come in Edmond with nine of the games decided by two runs or less.

LAST TIME VS. CENTRAL OKLA.
Emporia State had leads in both games before falling in a double header sweep at #8 Central Okla. The Hornets lost game on 3-1 and fell 5-4 in eight innings in the second game.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Northwest Mo. is 27-17, 15-13 in MIAA and are batting .296 with a 3.04 ERA.

SERIES HISTORY WITH NWMSU
Emporia State leads the all-time series 42-18 and have won 11 of the last 12.

LAST TIME VS. NW MISSOURI
Emporia State clinched a spot in the MIAA Softball Tournament with a double header split at Northwest Missouri.  The Hornets lost the first game 4-3 and came back with a 6-1 victory in game two.

UP NEXT
The Tournament is scheduled to continue on Saturday at 11 a.m.  A tournament champion needs to be determined by 2 p.m. on Sunday to meet NCAA Tournament selection deadlines..

HOW DO THEY RANK
Emporia State is ranked 12th in the nation in doubles per game and are in the top 50 nationally in scoring, home runs per game, slugging percentage, ERA and fielding percentage. Karley Schmelzer is leading the nation in wins with 26 victories and has nine shutouts to rank 11th in the nation. Taylor Zordel is the 17th toughest player to strike out in the nation and is ranked 18th in runs per game.  Emporia State leads the MIAA in doubles and batters hit by pitch and are ranked second in runs and RBI.
 
TOP SHELF
Catcher Amanda Self (Sr./Blue Springs, Mo.) was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and was named first-team All-MIAA. She has thrown out 11 of 30 base runners attempting to steal with three pickoffs on the season.  At the plate she is the toughest player to strikeout in MIAA and ranked 17th in nation with just four strikeouts in 140 at bats. She is second in the MIAA in doubles with 14 and tenth with a .438 on base percentage. She was first-team All-MIAA as a junior after earning third-team All-American honors as a sophomore. She was an honorable mention All-MIAA selection as a freshman.
 
TAYLOR MADE
Shortstop Taylor Zordel (So./Topeka, Kan.) was first-team All-MIAA. She leads the MIAA and is 18th in the nation with 54 runs scored. She is second in the MIAA in doubles with 14 and stolen bases with 28 in 29 attempts. She is ranked third in hits and triples, fifth in batting average and seventh in on base percentage. She was named MIAA Hitter of the Week on April 2 of this year. She was a second-team All-MIAA performer as a freshman and was named Academic All-District this year. She was an NFCA HS All-American for Washburn Rural HS.

BIG BIRD
Third baseman Tricia Vogel (Jr./Clearwater, Kan.) was named first-team All-MIAA as a utility player. She spent most of her time at third base, but also played at first base and in the outfield. She is ranked fourth in MIAA and 41st in the nation in RBI with 49 this season. She has over 100 RBI over the last two seasons. She is also fourth in the MIAA in doubles with 13 and is 19th in the nation in sac flies. She was first-team All-MIAA and NFCA All-Region at first base last year.
 
GOOD ONE
Right fielder Stephanie Goodwin (So./Overland Park, Kan.) was named second-team All-MIAA this season. She is fifth in MIAA with 11 home runs, is sixth in on base percentage at .453, seventh with a .638 slugging percentage, and tenth with 39 runs scored. She earned second-team NFCA and third-team Daktronics All-American honors as a freshman and was the 2012 MIAA Freshman of the Year.

CACY AT THE BAT
Designated player Cacy Williams (Fr./Platte City, Mo.) is the MIAA Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-MIAA honors at designated player. She leads MIAA with 16 doubles, is fourth with a .399 batting average and .713 slugging percentage.She is fifth in the league with 45 RBI and is 12th in home runs with nine homers on the season. She is the second straight Hornet to earn MIAA Freshman of the Year honors.
PETS IN THE ZOO
Left fielder Andrea Piezuch (Jr./Lenexa, Kan.) earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors in the outfield.  She is batting .309 and is ranked fourth in the MIAA with 13 doubles. It is the second straight year she has earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors for the Hornets.
 
BREW'S CREW
Center fielder Jessica Brewer (Sr./Kansas City, Mo.) is ranked second in the MIAA in sac bunts this season. She was named second-team All-MIAA as a junior, was first-team All-MIAA in the outfield as a sophomore and named honorable mention All-MIAA as a freshman.

HUFF AND PUFF AND BLOW THE HOUSE DOWN
First baseman Katie Huffman (Sr./Belton, Mo.) has returned to the starting lineup and has four home runs after coming off the bench last season. She started 49 games as a sophomore and 60 as a freshman for the Hornets.  
 
LITTLE SIS
Second baseman Bradie Schmelzer (So./Garden Plain, Kan.) hit .200 this season with two home runs. She has yet to commit an error in 42 chances in 24 games this year. She is the sister of junior Karley Schmelzer.

THE RIGHT CARD
Second baseman Taylor Reichard (Jr./Belton, Mo.) is batting .163 with four home runs in 31 games this season. She earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors at second base last season and was a second-team All-MIAA selection at third base as a freshman.

GARDEN OF EDEN
Pitcher Karley Schmelzer (Sr./Garden Plain, Kan.) was an honorable mention selection despite leading the MIAA and nation in wins with 26 victories. She leads the MIAA in appearances, starts and innings pitched, was second in shut outs, third in ERA, fourth in strike outs, and sixth in opponent batting average and is 11th in the nation in shutouts. With two no hitters this season she has a total of six in her career. She was second-team All-MIAA as a junior and senior and named second-team Daktronics All-Region as a junior.  
 
SHARPEN UP
Pitcher Lauren Sharp (Jr./Gladstone, Mo.) is 7-9 on the year with a 3.19 ERA on the season.

SUCCESS IN MAY
The Hornets have a 31-21 overall record in NCAA Tournament play.  The Hornets are 22-8 in post season elimination games (MIAA and NCAA tournament) over the past nine years.

HORNET HISTORY
Emporia State has finished as the NCAA Division II National Runners-up twice, in 2006 and 2008. ESU has qualified for NCAA Regional play nine straight years and ten times in the last 17 seasons.  The Hornets won the NAIA National Championship in 1983 and 1984 and won the AIAW National Championship in 1980.
