May 3, 2013-Karley Schemelzer tossed a five hitter with 11 strikeouts and Katie Huffman went three for three with two RBI and a run scored as Emporia State opened the MIAA Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Northeastern State on Friday afternoon. The rest of Friday's action was postponed due to rain. The Hornets will take on top seed Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m. at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
The RiverHawks first six outs of the game were struck out by Schmelzer, but NSU scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. Emporia State added three more runs in the third to go up 6-1.
Schmelzer allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts to improve to 27-7 on the year. Huffman and Taylor Reichard were both three for three on the day. Huffman had two RBI and a run scored while Reichard scored twice. Taylor Zordel went two for four with two RBI as well.
The Hornets will play top seeded Central Oklahoma at 11 a.m. in Overland Park, Kan. and win or lose will follow with a second game immediately following.
