May 10, 2013-For the second straight meetinggame Emporia State took a first inning lead only to lose to top seeded Ft. Hays State 5-3 in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional 1 Tournament in Hays, Kan.
The Hornets scored one in the top of the first when Cacy Williams singled in Tricia Vogel. The Tigers answered with one in the bottom of the first when MIAA Player of the Year Maddie Holub was walked in but FHSU left the bases loaded. Emporia State took a 2-1 lead when Stephanie Goodwin scored on a wild pitch.
Ft. Hays State tied the score when Tori Beltz singled in Danie Brinkmann who had walked with one out. Andrea Piezuch singled in Amanda Self to give Emporia State a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Paxton Duran singled in Holub in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game again.
In the bottom of the sixth Ft. Hays scored the winning runs when Brinkmann singled with the bases loaded to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
The Hornets will play Minot State at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game on Saturday. The Hornets are 6-2 in elimination games in the post season over the last two years.
