Hornets get second win in last at bat in two days

April 6, 2013-The Hornet softball team got a run rule win in game one before needing a come from behind effort in the night cap in a sweep of Missouri Southern on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex.  Emporia State won the matinee 10-0 and took game two 8-7 after trailing by four runs going into the bottom of the fourth.

Taylor Zordel again got the Hornets started in the bottom of the first when she single and stole second.  The next two batters got out before Amanda Self earned a walk.  Tricia Vogel kept the inning alive and drove in Zordel as she reached on a error by the Lions third baseman. Cacy Williams then struck out on a wild pitch and was able to reach first to load the bases.  Katie Huffman then delivered a two RBI single to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead after one inning. 

Jessica Brewer singled to start the second and stole second before going to third when Zordel forced a throw to first after she struck out.  Brewer beat out the throw home as Andrea Piezuch reached on a fielder's choice to short stop.  Bradie Schmelzer hit a two run homer in the third for a 6-0 Emporia State lead.  The Hornets added four more in the fourth inning highlighted by a two RBI double from pinch hitter Jessica Gragg, to secure the 10-0 run rule win.

The run support was more than enough for Karley Schmelzer as she tossed her seventh shut out of the season.  She threw her first one hitter of the season, to go with two no hitters, with nine strike outs and two walks.  Huffman, Bradie Schmelzer and Gragg all had two RBI on one hit while Zordel scored two runs with two hits.

Southern sent six batters to the plate in the top of the first of game two.  Emporia State answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Zordel again led off with a single and stole second.  Stephanie Goodwin single in front of an RBI double by Self.  Vogel drove in Goodwin with a ground out to short before Williams singled in Self for a 3-1 lead after one inning.  The Lions pulled to within 3-2 on an RBI double by Haley Pypes in the third inning.

The fourth was eventful for both teams.  The Lions got their first two batters on via a single and throwing error by pitcher Lauren Sharp.  After a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases Brooke Swadley delivered a two RBI double to give Southern the lead and chase Sharp.  Karley Schmelzer came on in relief and gave up an RBI single to Shelby Romines and a two run double by Pypes as the Lions took a 7-3 lead.

Williams led off the Hornets half of the inning with an infield single and Huffman followed with a walk.  Both advanced a base on passed ball and Taylor Reichard drove Williams in with a sac fly.  Brewer singled and Zordel walked to load the bases before a Piezuch ground out scored scored Huffman.  Goodwin then tied the score with a two RBI single to center that plated Zordel and Brewer.

Reichard started the Hornets game winning rally in the bottom of the sixth when she was hit by a pitch.  Brewer reached on a bunt to third and went to second on a double steal with Reichard.  Reichard was out at the plate on a ground ball to short by Zordel, but Brewer would score on Piezuch's ground out to give the Hornets an 8-7 lead. Schmelzer worked a perfect seventh as she retired the final eight batters she faced for her 19th win of the season.

Goodwin was two for four with two RBI and a run scored in game two.  Zordel and Brewer wer both two for three with two runs scored while Pizuch got two RBI without benefit of a hit.  Schmelzer struck out seven in 3.2 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.

The Hornets wrap up their six game home stand on Wednesday, April 10 against Newman.  First pitch of the double header is set for 5:00 p.m. at Trusler with the second game scheduled to be broadcast on KFFX/104.9FM.
