April 27, 2013-After spending ten hours reading the field after overnight rains, Emporia State pitchers tossed 13.1 scoreless innings before Truman scored one run in the seventh to earn a split at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won the first game 5-0 and fell 1-0 in game two.
Emporia State jumped on top early in the matinee as Cacy Williams delivered a two RBI double in the first inning. Andrea Piezuch added a sac fly later in the inning to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Katie Huffman led off the fourth with a double and came home on Tricia Vogel's single. Amanda Self made it 5-0 with a RBI single to score Vogel.
Karley Schmelzer worked the first 4.0 innings for the win, giving up just two hits while striking out eight. Lauren Sharp got her second three inning save by working a perfect final 3.0 innings. Self was three for four with a run scored, an RBI and a double. Williams went two for three with two RBI while Vogel scored two runs with an RBI.
Schmelzer and Kindra Henze were locked in a pitcher's duel in the night cap as they combined to give up just nine hits in the game.
After Schmelzer started the seventh with a strike out, she hit Ally McReynolds. McReynolds went to second on a wild pitch and came home on pinch hitter Whitney Richardson's single down the right field line. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Stephanie Goodwin beat out an infield single to the hole at short stop. Pinch hitter Jessica Gragg reached on a comebacker to the circle that Henze couldn't handle to put the tying run in scoring position. Huffman hit a sharp grounder right at Cate Simon who stepped on third for the force out as Truman snapped a 19 game losing streak to the Hornets.
Schmelzer gave up just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. The Hornets got singles from Taylor Zordel, Jessica Brewer and Goodwin and a double from Vogel for their four hits.
Emporia State will wrap up the season on Sunday afternoon with a double header against Lindenwood. First pitch is set for 12 noon at the Trusler Sports Complex. Emporia State's five seniors - Jessica Brewer, Karley Schmelzer, Lauren Sharp, Amanda Self and Katie Huffman - will be recognized between games.
NOTES:
The start of the double header was delayed five hours due to overnight rains in the Emporia area.
Emporia State is in fifth place in the MIAA heading into Sunday's action. With a sweep of Lindenwood and a split between Missouri Western and Northeastern State the Hornets can move into a tie for third and would gain the third seed if Central Missouri can move into seventh place.
