April 22, 2013-Emporia State moved their home field winning streak to eight games with a double header sweep of Newman on Monday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won game one 7-0 and took a 9-1 run rule victory in the nightcap that was interrupted for 30 minutes by lightning.
The Hornets got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Jessica Brewer reached on an error on the Jets first baseman, then stole second. She went to third on a passed ball and scored on Tricia Vogel's sac fly that was dropped in left field.
That was more than enough offense for the Emporia State pitching staff. After giving up a leadoff infield single, Karley Schmelzer retired the next 12 batters for the win and Lauren Sharp gave up just one hit in the final 3.0 innings tp pick up the save.
The Hornets took control with a four run third inning. Bradie Schmelzer reached on a dropped fly ball in right field and scored on Stephanie Goodwin's double to open the inning. Taylor Zordel walked, Brewer singled and Vogel was hit by a pitch to score Goodwin and keep the bases loaded. Cacy Williams drove in Zordel as she reached when the first baseman could not hold onto the throw on a ground ball. Andrea Piezuch then hit a sac fly that was dropped in left field as Brewer scored to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.
Goodwin doubled to lead off the fourth and scored on Vogel's single to give Emporia State a 6-0 lead and Goodwin made it 7-0 with a one out homer in the sixth.
Goodwin went three for three with three runs, two RBI, two doubles and a home run. Vogel was one for one with three RBI and a double. Schmelzer went 4.0 innings and gave up just one hit with five strikeouts for her 23rd win of the season while Sharp gave up just one hit in the final 3.0 innings to earn her first save.
Emporia State jumped out early in game two with three runs in the first inning. Zordel led off with a single and after two outs would score on a single by Amanda Self. Williams followed with an RBI double and Jessica Gragg deliverd an RBI single for a 3-0 Hornet lead. Taylor Reichard made it 4-0 with a lead off homer in the second.
With one out in the top of the third, the teams were pulled off the field for a 30 minute lightning delay. The Swedes scored a run on a walk and a single out of the delay to pull within 4-1 going to the bottom of the third.
Goodwin was hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth, went to second on a single by Zordel, third on a single by Piezuch and scored on Vogel's sac fly for a 5-1 lead. The Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to envoke the run rule. The first five batters reached capped by a two run double from Goodwin for an 8-1 lead. After a double play Piezuch's fly ball to right was dropped and allowed Goodwin to score from second and end the game 9-1.
Goodwin was one for two with two runs and two RBI as she went five for six with five runs and four RBI in the double header. Gragg was two for three with a run and an RBI while Williams went one for two with two runs and an RBI. Schmelzer allowed one run on two hits with six strike outs as she moved to 24-6 on the season.
Emporia State will end the regular season this weekend against Truman and Lindenwood. First pitch of the double header against Truman on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
NOTES:
Schmelzer's 24 wins are the most in a season by a Hornet since Samantha Sheeley went 30-8 in 2008 as the Hornets finished second in the nation. Sheeley won 11 games in the post season, so Schmelzer's 24 wins are the most in the regular season since Courtney Reed went 24-4 in the 2007 regular season on the way to a 29-5 overall record.
