HOME SWEET HOME  
Emporia State returns to the Trusler Sports Complex for the final six games of the regular season starting with a double dip against Newman. The Hornets are 6-2 at home and have won 22 of their last 24 games at Trusler.

THE?COACH
Julie LeMaire is 71-25 in her second season at Emporia State. She was named MIAA Coach of the Year after going 20-0 in the MIAA last season, winning the regular season and tournament championships. She is 163-102 in her fifth season as a head coach. She came to ESU after three years at Ft. Hays State and took the Tigers to the MIAA Tournament Championship game in 2011.

LAST AT BAT  
Emporia State clinched a spot in the MIAA Softball Tournament with a double header split at Northwest Missouri on Sunday in Maryville, Mo.  The Hornets lost the first game 4-3 and came back with a 6-1 victory in game two. Taylor Zordel scored three times with an RBI in the second game. Karley Schmelzer scattered four hits and struckout nine as she improved to 22-6 on the year

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 29-14, 16-8 in the MIAA. They are 5-5 over the last ten games and have split their last three double headers. The Hornets are hitting .309 as a team with 79 doubles. Taylor Zordel is hitting .405 with an MIAA best 50 runs. Cacy Williams hitting .405 with nine home runs and 40 RBI. Tricia Vogel leads the Hornets with 43 RBI. Andrea  Piezuch, Amanda Self, Williams and Zordel all have 13 doubles while Vogel has 12. As a team Emporia State has a 2.50 ERA. Karley Schmelzer is 22-6 with a 1.91 ERA and 147 strike outs.  She has eight shut outs with 22 complete games.

SCOUTING THE JETS
Newman is 6-33 overall and 3-11 in the Heartland Conference. They have gone 0-8 against MIAA teams this year, but went extra innings with both Missouri Southern and league leader Ft. Hays State. As a team they are batting .239 on the year and have a 6.16 ERA in the circle. Erin Monday is their leading hitter with a .313 average, two home runs and 16 RBI. Kelsey Jones is hitting .274 with a team best 13 doubles to go with three home runs and 19 RBI.  She is also 3-9 in the circle with a 5.13 ERA.

SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State has never lost to Newman  as they lead the all-time series 9-0 with all of the games coming since 2008. The Hornets have out scored the Jets 92-9 in the nine games.

LAST TIME VS. NEWMAN
The #14 Emporia State softball team tuned up for the MIAA Tournament with a pair of run rule wins over Newman.  The Hornets won the first game 9-0 and took a 16-2 victory in game two, both of them in five innings. Tricia Vogel hit a grand slam and Karley Schmelzer tossed a two hit shutout in game one.  Every batter reached base for Emporia State in the night cap led by Taylor Zordel's three for three effort with five RBI and two runs scored. Jennifer Heerey picked up her tenth win of the year, giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in addition to her own two run triple.


UP NEXT
Emporia State ends the regular season this weekend against Truman and Lindenwood. The Hornets host Truman on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Lindenwood on Sunday at 12 noon.  It will be the final MIAA trip to Trusler for Truman while Sunday will be Senior Day for the Hornets.
