April 20, 2013-Emporia State got another road split on Saturday with a loss and win at Missouri Western.  The Hornets dropped the first game 3-1 and came back to take a 4-0 win in game two.

Western took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one before the Hornets tied it in the fourth.  Taylor Zordel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second. She came home on the first of three doubles on the day for Tricia Vogel to tie the score at 1-1. The Griffons took the lead back at 2-1 with an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

Emporia State threatened in the top of the sixth when Zordel led off with a double, Vogel was hit by a pitch and Amanda Self walked to load the bases with one out.  The Hornets were not able to score and in the bottom of the sixth Michelle Stevenson gave the Griffons an insurance run with a one out homer.

Lauren Sharp took the loss for the Hornets, scattering seven hits and giving up two earned runs.  Andrea Piezuch and Katie Huffman had singles to go with the double by Zordel and Vogel as Emporia State was limited to just four hits.

The Hornets were able to get on the board first in the nightcap with three runs in the fourth inning. Vogel hit a one out double and went to third on Self's single. After a short fly out Cacy Williams drove in Vogel and Self with a single to center.   Bradie Schmelzer followed with an RBI single to center and went to third on a error by the centerfielder.  Piezuch beat out an infield single but Schmelzer was out at the plate trying to score to end the inning.  Vogel tacked on another run with an RBI double in the fifth to give Emporia State a 4-0 lead.

That was more than enough run support for Karley Schmelzer as she tossed her eighth shut out of the year.  The senior allowed only four hits with only one strike out but did not walk or hit a batter.  Vogel had two doubles and an RBI while Cacy Williams went two for three with a run and two RBI. Zordel was two for four officially with a run scored and reached base three times.

The Hornets take on the hottest team in the MIAA on Sunday when they travel to Northwest Missouri.  The Bearcats have won five straight after a double header sweep of Washburn on Saturday. First pitch from Bearcat Field is set for 12 noon in Maryville, Mo.
