END OF THE ROAD
Emporia State travels to the Midland Empire for a the final road games of the regular season. The Hornets take on Missouri Western on Saturday and Northwest Missouri on Sunday.
THE?COACH
Julie LeMaire is 69-23 in her second season at Emporia State. She was named MIAA Coach of the Year after going 20-0 in the MIAA last season, winning the regular season and tournament championships. She is 161-100 in her fifth season as a head coach. She came to ESU after three years at Ft. Hays State and took the Tigers to the MIAA Tournament Championship game in 2011.
LAST AT BAT
Emporia State snapped Northeastern State's eight game winning streak before settling for a split in Tahlequah, Okla. on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets won the first game 5-1 before falling 5-4 in game two.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 27-12, 14-6 in the MIAA. Offensively, the Hornets lead the MIAA in doubles, are ranked third in team batting and second in runs, RBI and slugging percentage. Cacy Williams is third in the MIAA in batting at .421 with nine home runs and 38 RBI. Stephanie Goodwin is hitting .342 with ten home runs to rank fourth in the league. Taylor Zordel is hitting .415 with an MIAA best 45 runs. Tricia Vogel leads the Hornets and is ranked fourth in the MIAA with 39 RBI. Andrea Piezuch, Amanda Self and Williams share the MIAA lead in doubles with 13 while Zordel has 12 to rank fourth in the league. As a team Emporia State is ranked third in the MIAA in ERA. Karley Schmelzer is 20-6 with a 2.08 ERA and 134 strike outs. She leads the league in wins and complete games and is second in shut outs.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS
Missouri Western is 29-11, 13-5 in the MIAA. Jackie Bishop is 16-4 in the circle with a 1.52 ERA and 162 strike outs in 143.0 innings.
SERIES HISTORY
ESU leads the all-time series 51-26. The Hornets have won ten of the last 14 meetings and 19 of the last 24 games between the two. They have met 12 times in the MIAA Tournament with ESU holding an 9-4 advantage, including a 6-5 win in last year's championship game.
LAST TIME VS. MO. WESTERN
Emporia State fell 4-2 in a non-conference game in St. Joseph, Mo. Karley Schmelzer took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Amanda Self was two for three with two doubles and a run scored.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Northwest Missouri is 22-12, 10-8 in the MIAA. Jenna Creger is 10-7 in the circle with a 1.72 ERA and 112 strike outs in 114.0 innings.
SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State leads the all-time series 41-17 and have won ten in a row against Northwest Missouri.
LAST TIME VS. NW MISSOURI
Emporia State pounded out 20 hits in a St. Patrick's Day sweep of Northwest Missouri at Trusler last year. The Hornets won game one 7-2 and picked up an 8-0 run rule win in the night cap. Tricia Vogel was five for eight with seven RBI in the double header.
