April 13, 2013-The Emporia State softball team snapped Northeastern State's eight game winning streak before settling for a split in Tahlequah, Okla. on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets won the first game 5-1 before falling 5-4 in game two.
Emporia State's Karley Schmelzer and Northeastern State's Cayce Coleman matched zeros on the scoreboard for the first five innings. Tricia Vogel broke the tie with a lead off homer in the top of the sixth to put the Hornets on top. Amanda Self would single and eventually score on a squeeze bunt by Katie Huffman for a 2-0 lead. Vogel would double in two more in the top of the seventh and then come around to score on Cacy Williams single for a 5-0 lead. Navada Campos led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to break up the shut out, but that would all for the RiverHawks.
Vogel went three for four with a homer, double, three RBI and two runs scored to pace the Hornet offense. Schmelzer scattered five hits over 7.0 innings with four strike outs to earn her 20th win of the season.
After late offense in the first game, the bats got started early in game two. Taylor Zordel and Vogel each doubled in the top of the first to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Saharra Henson led off the Northeastern half of the inning with a double and tied the score on a ground out. The RiverHawks took their first lead of the day thanks to four runs, two of them unearned, in the bottom of the second.
The Hornets tried to answer in the top of the third. Zordel and Jessica Brewer both reached to start the inning and Vogel drove them both in with another double. Two outs later Williams singled in Vogel to pull Emporia State within 5-4. That would be the final score of the day. After a double play ended the bottom of the third Lauren Sharp retired the final nine batters she faced while the Hornets would get twice get their lead off batter on but failed to score in the final four innings.
Vogel was two for four with three RBI to give her six on the day and added two more doubles. Zordel went three for four with a double and two runs scored. Sharp took the loss giving up five runs, three of them earned, on nine hits with no strike outs and just one walk.
The Hornets are scheduled to play at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. on Wednesday, but that double header may be moved to allow the Cardinals to play conference make up games.
