March 30, 2013-The Hornets got a run-rule win and an extra inning win on Saturday in a double header sweep of Lincoln.  Emporia State won the first game 8-0 in five innings and the second 5-4 in eight innings in a double header moved to Topeka due to over night rains in Emporia.

After a 1-2-3 inning by Karley Schmelzer in the top of the first, Taylor Zordel delivered a lead off home run to jump start the Hornets in the matinee.  Andrea Piezuch singled and Stephanie Goodwin walked before Tricia Vogel hit a one out, two RBI double for a 3-0 lead after one inning. Piezuch doubled in two more in the bottom of the first for a 5-0 lead.  Emporia State took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two RBI single from Cacy Williams and ended it one batter later on Katie Huffman's RBI single.

Schmelzer earned her fifth shut out of the season with a three hitter in 5.0 innings. Piezuch was two for three with two RBI and a run scored while Williams went two for three with two RBI as well.

Lauren Sharp started game two retiring the side and Zordel again got the Hornets started offensively.  The Topeka native singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Goodwin's sac fly for a 1-0 lead after one inning. Zordel hit a two out double in the third and scored on Piezuch's single for a 2-0 lead.  Zordel led off the sixth with a single and stole second. After two outs, Amanda Self worked a walk and Vogel singled in Zordel.  Williams followed with a double that scored Self for a seemingly comfortable 4-0 lead going to the seventh inning.

Brianna Akers led off the seventh with a single and Kristina Hein and Clair Lorenz worked one out walks to load the bases. Shantae Duren then delivered a pinch hit double to score two and cut the Hornet lead in half.  Schmelzer then came on in relief and Sam Kircher followed with a single through the left side to cut the lead to 4-3 and Haley Bartow tied it on a sac fly.  Emporia State failed to score in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.  Schmelzer retired the side on order in the top of the inning.  Goodwin led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and went to third on Self's single.  Vogel delivered the game winner with a single to left that scored Goodwin as the Hornets moved their winning streak to six games.

Zordel was four for four with three runs scored and a double.  Vogel went two for four with two RBI in her last two at bats. Schmelzer got the win in relief giving up just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.

Emporia State travels to Central Missouri on Tuesday before coming home for a six game homestand at the Trusler Sports Complex.  First pitch in Warrensburg, Mo. is set for 4 p.m.
