March 28, 2013-The Emporia State softball team ran its winning streak against Washburn to 29 games with a double header sweep of the Lady Blues on Thursday in Topeka.  The Hornets won game one 5-1 and took a 9-4 decision in game two.

The Hornets wasted little time getting started in the matinee with three runs in the top of the first.  Taylor Zordel led off with a single and stole second. She went to third on Andrea Piezuch's ground out and scored on Stephanie Goodwin's single.  Goodwin went to third on a double by Amanda Self and scored on Tricia Vogel's single.  Cacy Williams completed the first inning scoring with an RBI single to score Self.  Goodwin drove in Bradie Schmelzer in the second to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Blues finally got on the board with a lone run in the third inning on three singles and two walks.  They scored on a bases loaded double play and would leave the bases loaded in the inning. Emporia State came back immediately with a run in the fourth.  Piezuch singled with one out and would come around to score on an error following Self's single to give the Horents a 5-1 lead.

Goodwin went two for three with two RBI and a run scored while Self went three for four with a run scored.  Karley Schmelzer went the distance scattering seven hits with four walks to allow one run with four strikeouts.

Washburn scored first in the night cap getting a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the first. Emporia State took the lead on Katie Huffman's three run home run in the top of the second.  Goodwin led off the third with a home run and Jessica Brewer would single in Vogel for a 5-1 Hornet lead after two and a half innings. 

Two singles, a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases for Washburn in the third and Deidra Jones delivered a bases clearing double to pull the Lady Blues within 5-4 after three inning.  Vogel hit a two run double and then scored on Huffman's single to push the Hornet lead back to 8-4 in the top of the fourth inning. A two out homer by Williams provided the final score of 9-4 to complete the sweep.

Vogel went three for four with two RBI and three runs scored while Huffman was two for four with four RBI and a home run.  MIAA Pitcher of the Week Lauren Sharp got the win allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks.

The Hornets are scheduled to host Lincoln on Saturday.  First pitch of Bark at the Park Day at the Trusler Sports Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
