March 22, 2013-In a pair of games that were agreed upon following the cancellation of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge, Emporia State two games in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday afternoon. The Hornets defeated Lincoln 4-2 and fell to host Missouri Western by the same score.
Emporia State opened the day getting an RBI double from Cacy Williams in the second inning against Lincoln and went up 3-0 on an RBI single from Stephanie Goodwin and RBI double by Tricia Vogel in the third. They finished their scoring in the fifth when Bradie Schmelzer led off with a double and scored on Taylor Zordel's triple.
That was more than enough for a Hornet pitching staff that saw their string of consecutive scoreless innings reach 27.1 innings before the Blue Tigers scored a pair of runs with two outs in the sixth.
Lauren Sharp went the distance to get the win allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with four strike outs and no walks. Zordel was two for three with a run scored, an RBI and a triple.
The second game was a non-conference match-up between the two top MIAA teams over the past several years. Both teams were scoreless through the first three innnings although Emporia State got two runners into scoring position in the top of the first. Missouri Western broke the tie in the fourth, scoring three runs with two outs in the frame. The Hornets battled back with two runs in the sixth. Andrea Piezuch and Amanda Self each hit doubles around a strikeout and Vogel put Emporia State on the board with a sac fly. Williams delivered a two out triple to score Self and make it 4-3 headed to the bottom of the sixth. The Griffons scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning for the final score of 4-2.
Karley Schmelzer took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Self was two for three with two doubles and a run scored while Piezuch went two for four with a double and a run scored.
The Hornets are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, March 27 when they travel to Washburn. First pitch of the Turnpike Tussle is set for 2 p.m. in Topeka.
