March 20, 2013-Karley Schmelzer tossed her second no hitter of the year and Lauren Sharp followed with her second straight shut out as Emporia State swept Southwest Baptist in MIAA softball action on Wednesday. The Hornets won game one 8-0 and posted an 11-0 win in game two.
The teams were scoreless through the first two innings until Taylor Zordel doubled in Jessica Brewer in the top of the third for Emporia State. The Hornets then put four on the board in the fourth inning thanks to two hit batters, two errors and a wild pitch. Schmelzer struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth and the Hornets scored three more in the top of the fifth to get in position for the run rule win. Schmelzer struck out her fifth straight Bearcat to lead off the fifth inning. She then got a ground out and gave up her second walk of the day before ending the game with her tenth strikeout.
It was the second no hitter of the year for Schmelzer and the first since the opening game of the year. Bradie Schmelzer helped her sister by going two for three with two RBI, a run scored and a double. Katie Huffman was one for two with a double and two runs scored while Zordel went one for two with a run, an RBI and a double.
It didn't take near as long to get the scoring started in the night cap as Zordel led off the first with a home run. The Hornets made it 2-0 in the fourth as Cacy Williams singled in Amanda Self. Emporia State scored three more in the fifth as Zordel led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Andrea Piezuch before Cacy Williams doubled in two runs for a 5-0 lead. Williams and Piezuch both had two RBI doubles as the Hornets scored six runs in the top of the sixth as Emporia State increased their lead to 11-0.
It was more than enough for Sharp, who tossed her second straight shut out and ran her string of scoreless innings to 11.2 dating back to the 7th inning against Ft. Hays State. Williams went three for four with five RBI, a run scored and two doubles. Zordel was two for four with three runs, an RBI, a triple and a home run. Piezuch went one for three with three RBI and a run scored with a double.
The Hornets were scheduled to compete in the MIAA/NSIC Crossover this weekend in St. Joseph, Mo. however the full tournament has been canceled due to the inclement weather forecast. Emporia State will still travel to St. Joseph but will now only play two games - one against Lincoln on Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a single contest against Missouri Western at 5 p.m.
