March 16, 2013-The Emporia State softball team got back on the winning track with a pair of shut out wins over Neb.-Kearney at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won 12-0 and 8-0 in run rules in both games.

Karley Schmelzer retired the Lopers in order in the top of the first in the first game.  The Hornets then put nine runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Amanda Self had the big hit in the inning with a bases load double that scored three.  Emporia State added three runs on two hits and three Loper errors in the third inning to go up 12-0.

Self was two for three with four RBI and Jessica Brewer added two RBI from the nine hole in the lineup.  Schmelzer tossed her second shut out of the year, allowing two hits while striking out seven in 5.0 innings.

The Hornets got a 1-2-3 inning from Lauren Sharp in the top of the first and the nightcap and then put five runs up in their half of the frame.  Stephanie Goodwin had a double and Amanda Self a triple in the inning that scored runs. After Self singled to start the third Cacy Williams and Jessica Gragg hit back to back homers to give the Hornets an 8-0 lead.

Sharp tossed her first shut out of the season in a four hitter with two strike outs. Williams was two for three for three RBI with her seventh home run of the season.

The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Southwest Baptist.  First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
