March 15, 2013-The Emporia State softball team saw their 16 game home winning streak snapped in a double header loss to #21 Fort Hays State on Friday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex. Emporia lost the first game 7-1 and fell 6-3 in the night cap.
The Hornets fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first of the matinee when Danie Brinkmann hit a two run home run. Emporia State got a run back when Tricia Vogel led off the second with a home run. The Tigers scored five runs, four of them unearned, in the seventh inning to seal the win.
Karley Schmelzer took the loss, giving up seven runs, three of them earned, on ten hits with five strikeouts. Vogel had the only two hits for Emporia State with a homer and a single.
The Tigers got on the board first in the nightcap as well, scoring an unearned run in the first inning. They went up 3-0 in the fifth before the Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Amanda Self singled in two runs to pull Emporia State within 3-2 and had the go ahead run in scoring postition before a pop out ended the inning.
Ft. Hays tacked on an insurance run in the sixth before the Hornets threatened again. Cacy Williams led off the inning with a double and Katie Huffman followed with a single. With one out Taylor Zordel doubled in Williams and chased Tiger starter Paxton Duran. Maddie Holub entered the game with runners on second and third with no outs and got the Tigers out of the inning leading 4-3. Ft. Hays State added two runs in the top of the 7th inning for the final score of 6-3.
Lauren Sharp took the loss allowing six runs, three of them earned, on nine hits. Self was three for four with two RBI and Zordel went two for four with an RBI.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they take on Neb.-Kearney. First pitch at the Trusler Sports Complex is set for 12 noon.
